  1. Debate Rules If the first Affirmative speaker fails to define the resolution, then that team must accept any reasonable definition given by the negative.

  2. Debate Rules Only the moderator (also called “chair” or “speaker”) grants the right to speak.

  3. Debate Rules Debaters shall stand to deliver all speeches.

  4. Debate Rules In Discussion Style, debaters remain seated during discussion period.

  5. Debate Rules Debaters must not read their speeches, though they may make reasonable reference to notes. Judges should penalize speakers for excessive reading.

  6. Debate Rules Functions of refutation and defense will be divided among the team. All debaters must develop their own case and clash with the opposing team.

  7. Debate Rules The Negative Team’s primary duty is to clash directly with the Affirmative arguments. Judges should severely penalize debaters who rely heavily on prepared negative speeches.

  8. Debate Rules Debaters must never disrupt a speaker with interruptions or distractions, including consultations with team mates.

  9. Debate Rules During the discussion period, debaters raise their hand and may ask and respond to questions upon being recognized by the chair.

  10. Debate Rules Contributions during discussion period may not exceed 1 minute.

  11. Debate Rules Judges should severely penalize lack of participation by a debater.
