  2. Compensation Claims There is a huge and fast-growing industry arising from compensation claims following even the most minor accidents. With millions of dollars often going to successful claimants, there is an obvious temptation to exaggerate, if not invent, the harm that has been done. There has also been a dramatic increase in law firms advertising for accident victims, and lawyers offering their services on a no-win-no-fee basis, which allows people on low or moderate incomes to go to court with no risk of running up expenses they couldn't otherwise afford. Lawyers earn nothing for unsuccessful claims but take a big percentage when damages are awarded.

  3. Select the correct conclusion, which can be inferred from the passage. • A. Without the no-win-no-fee option, and advertising by law firms, there probably would be fewer accident claims. • B. Lawyers encourage clients to exaggerate or invent injuries. • C. The no-win-no-fee system benefits the lawyer much more than it does the claimant. • D. It is the greed of lawyers, not of their clients, which is responsible for the huge growth in compensation claims.

  5. Alexander Passage In October 333 BC Alexander's Macedonian force confronted the Persian king, Darius III, and his arm at Issus. The Macedonians, though more disciplined than the Persians, were hugely outnumbered. Yet, surprisingly, in the desperate encounter that followed, it was Darius's massive force that fled in defeat, leaving Alexander victorious.

  6. Select the correct conclusion, which can be inferred from the passage. • A. In ancient warfare it was better to have a small, disciplined army than a very large one. • B. Being so heavily outnumbered inspired Alexander's army to fight more fiercely than the Persians. • C. Having such superiority in numbers made the Persian commanders at Issus over-confident. • D. The weapons and tactics used by Alexander's army were more successful than those of the Persians. • E. Having numerical superiority on a battlefield need not always be a decisive advantage.

  9. The Right Leaders No electoral system will ever produce the right leaders. In order to succeed in a leadership election, a person must be ambitious and single-minded. But these are not good qualities in a leader. Those who have the virtues needed in a leader - humility and open-mindedness - would not become leaders in an election, because elections are necessarily competitive.

  10. Which expresses the best conclusion? • Ambition and single-mindedness are necessary in a leader. • Humility and open-mindedness do not help candidates to win elections. • People who win elections are never the right leaders. • Humble and open-minded individuals are desirable as leaders. • The major fault of the electoral system is its competitiveness

  13. Vegetarians Vegetarian food can be healthier than a traditional diet. Research has shown that vegetarians are less likely to suffer from heart disease and obesity than meat eaters. Concern has been expressed that vegetarians do not get enough protein in their diet but it has been demonstrated that, by selecting foods carefully, vegetarians are able to amply meet their needs in this respect.

  14. Which expresses the best conclusion? • A vegetarian diet can be better for health than a traditional diet. • Adequate protein is available from a vegetarian diet. • A traditional diet is very high in protein. • A balanced diet is more important for health than any particular food. • Vegetarians are unlikely to suffer from heart disease and obesity.
