  5. Pope Gregory IX (1227- 41) - two letters: (1) Indictment of the Catholic Bishop of Bosnia, 5 June 1232: “To Ugrin, archbishop of Kalocsa, and the bishop of Zagreb We cannot overlook the serious and great faults of our brother…bishop of Bosnia,…that he is illiterate, a public defender of heretics, …never administers the sacraments of the Church, …that he is wholy ignorant of the baptismal formula. …and his blood brother is a known heretical leader”… (The Bishop of Bosnia was found guilty of the charges and deposed in 1233) (2)An attempt to launch a crusade against heresy in Bulgaria, 27 January 1238: “To the noble king of Hungary. Such indeed are the heretics and schismatics who…pay no heed to his Vicar; …Jews, though blinded by sin, believe that God the Father created everything, seen and unseen, while the heretics believe that what is visible was founded and created by the prince of darkness.” Source: Christian Dualist Heresies in the Byzantine World c.650-c.1450. Selected sources translated and annotated by Janet Hamilton and Bernard Hamilton. Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1998. 265-266.

  6. “You, who read my tombstone, you may tread upon the stars. And you returned because there is not anything but yourself alone. The man can see what he has not seen, hear what he has not heard, try what he has not tried, be where he has not been, but always and everywhere he can only find himself or not…” (A tombstone of a Bosnian lord dated 1094) Source: Kadric, Ševko.
