  1. Homework Year 7 Summer 1

  2. Week 1 William was convinced that one of the reasons why he had been able to conquer England was because it had hardly any castles. He had used castles very successfully to control Normandy. The Normans used their castles to control the nearby areas. They could ride out from the castles to deal with trouble or hide in them if they were attacked. William had new, loyal nobles from Normandy build over 100 castles all over the country. The motte and bailey castes were built extremely quickly, some in just eight days! From their castles, the new Norman lords could control the local area, and the sight of them made it clear who was now in control. The need for quick constructions meant materials such as earth and wood were used and although this sped up the building process, it meant they didn’t last very long. Over time, the more important ones were rebuilt from stone. Once William believed he had tamed England he started to build stone castles. These would be permanent and would last for centuries. These were called stone keep castles. They were made out of stone, were square built and were a lot stronger. What did the Normans use castles for? What was the first type of castle called? What was the advantage of the motte and bailey castle? What was the disadvantage of the motte and bailey castle? What type of castle did William go on to build? What was the advantage of these later castles? Write a PEAL of how William used Castles to control England.

  3. Week 2 The Medieval Church played a far greater role in Medieval England than the Church does today. In Medieval England, the Church dominated everybody’s life. All Medieval people – be they village peasants or towns people – believed that God, Heaven and Hell all existed. From the very earliest of ages, the people were taught that the only way they could get to Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church let them. Everybody would have been terrified of Hell and the people would have been told of the sheer horrors awaiting for them in Hell in the weekly services they attended. The king was not the only person with power during the Norman period. The Catholic church also had a lot of power, William I had a very close relationship with the church in fact, the Pope gave support to William when he invaded England. Soon after the Conquest, William I began the Normanization of the English Church. He co-operated with the Pope in the removal and imprisonment of the Anglo-Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury, Stigand (who starved himself to death, 1072). William then put his own Norman Bishops in place to control the English Church. Such as Archbishop Lanfranc As William now had control over the English Church he also had control over peoples spirituality. Consequently, he was able to control the English through the Church. What kind of role did the church play in Medieval England? How did the church dominate people’s lives? What were they taught at the church? What kind of relationship did William have with the church? What did William do after the conquest? What did he do when he cooperated with the Pope? Who did William place in control of the English churches? What did William now control with the power of the church? Write a PEAL on how William used the church to control England.
