    1. Huron Academy “Character, Integrity, Academic Excellence” ANNUAL EDUCATION REPORT 2008-2009

    2. HURON ACADEMY Our Mission To be a leader in the areas of academic excellence and safety, while developing the character of our students. The school seeks to lead public charter elementary schools in Michigan, and traditional public elementary schools in Macomb County, in academic excellence, as measured on state and national tests. The school seeks to promote the development of character in our students as measured by a safe and orderly environment where all children are accepted and can learn. Our Goals Lead all Macomb County elementary schools on MEAP scores Lead all Ferris State University charter schools on MEAP scores Lead all Michigan public charter schools on MEAP scores The average score on the Performance Series Test for Huron Academy on a grade by grade basis will be above the 50th percentile for all Michigan schools taking the test.

Teacher / Pupil Ratio 2008-2009 16:1 Parent Teacher Conferences 2008-2009 100% Highly Qualified Teachers 2008-2009 100% Education Yes School Report Card Grade Huron Academy has once again reached Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). The school has never missed this criteria. 2008-2009 K-6th Grade – B Students With Disabilities 14.6 % of Huron Academy students have active I.E.P.’s (63 /432) Free and Reduced Lunches 38.2 % of the students are identified for free or reduced lunches. 165 of 432 were identified this school year.

    5. Annual Yearly Progress Attendance Objective Statistics Michigan has chosen to use school attendance as an additional indicator for Adequate Yearly Progress for the elementary and middle school grades. A school's attendance rate is calculated as the aggregate total number of days of actual attendance for all students in the school, divided by the aggregate total number of possible days of attendance for all students, based upon each student's date of enrollment, times 100, to obtain a percentage figure. The percentage target for the state will be 90% attendance and will remain in effect through 2013-14.. Schools above this percent will be considered making AYP, for attendance.

    7. Subjects Taught The following subjects were taught during the 2008-2009 academic year: -Reading -Social Studies -Spelling -Music -Science w/lab -Writing -Physical Education -Mathematics -English -Art -Phonics -Computer Technology -Proud to be Polite -Latin -Character Values & Ethics

    8. WRAT Testing WRAT-4 allows educators to examine students' development of reading, spelling, and arithmetic. At Huron Academy we use WRAT testing to evaluate Kindergarten and 1st grade students Mathematic proficiencies.

    9. About the Test Description: The Wide Range Achievement Test--4 (WRAT-4) is the fourth edition of the popular test that was first published in 1936. Like the earlier versions, the WRAT-4 contains three subtests: Reading (recognizing and naming letters and words), Spelling (writing symbols, name, and words), and Arithmetic (solving oral problems and written computations). The authors of the WRAT-4 stress that the test is designed to measure basic school codes rather than comprehension, reasoning, and judgment processes. Scoring: The manual provided to teachers and administrators contains information to transform the raw scores into standard scores. Reliability: The Rasch analysis provided person-separation and item-separation values and these are given as evidence of internal consistency. Traditional internal-consistency data, such as split-half or alpha coefficients, are not provided and are needed. Test-retest reliability coefficients range from .79 (Level 2 Arithmetic) to .97 (Level 1 Spelling), but no indication of the time interval between test and retest is given and the coefficients are based on small samples for only a few age groups in the school age range.

    12. 1st Grade Level equivalents yearly trend data for class entering 2007-08

    13. WRAT Analysis In our third year of administering the WRAT-4 test in Kindergarten and 1st grade the data easily shows that the students have grown an average of 1 ½ grade points in mathematics. Kindergarten classroom averages for this year showed 1st grade and above achievement levels for students tested in math (1.3). 1st grade proficiencies recorded scores well into the 2nd grade level for math (2.7). These scores are very promising and should establish our students well moving into the Scantron Performance series in the 2nd grade.

    14. Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) DRA allows educators to examine students' development of reading, comprehension, and fluency. At Huron Academy we use DRA testing to evaluate Kindergarten and 1st grade students Reading proficiencies.

    15. About the Test Description: DRA has helped ensure students become independent, successful readers. The DRA helps educators: Identify students' reading achievement through systematic observation, recording, and evaluation of performance Analyze data, document progress, and communicate assessment information to administrators, parents, and students Drive effective reading instruction tailored to critical intervention points derived from assessment results Methodology: During the testing period your child will read a benchmark book to the teacher and then retell the story. The teacher then scores your child on a range of skills, such as accuracy of reading, comprehension, and fluency (ease of reading and use of expression). DRA matches your child to an appropriate level of text difficulty. This system starts with level A, for the easiest books, and then switches to numeric levels, running from 1 to 80.

    16. 2008-09 DRA Level Equivalents School Average

    17. DRA Analysis In our inaugural year of administering the Developmental Reading Assessment test in Kindergarten and 1st grade the data easily establishes baseline data for us to use in years to come in reading. Kindergarten classroom averages for this year showed 1st grade and above achievement levels for students tested in reading (4.4). 1st grade proficiencies recorded scores that indicate higher 1st grade learning levels for reading (12.5). These scores are very promising and should establish our students well moving into the Scantron Performance series in the 2nd grade.

    18. Scantron Performance Tests The Scantron Performance Series is a web-based computer-adaptive diagnostic test that's reliable, valid, and standards-based. Our staff can use it to pinpoint proficiency levels instantly, place students in the appropriate programs, report progress, and predict performance on high-stakes tests. With Performance Series, students take individualized tests. The online test adjusts automatically to each student's ability level, generating more difficult questions if the student is answering correctly and easier ones if the student is answering incorrectly. Using Performance Series, individual teachers, administrators, students, and parents all get the test results they need. For example, the Student Report shows individual student performance, so classroom teachers get data to help them create learning groups. The Summary Report shows average performance data at the school level, so school administrators can target curriculum areas in need of help.

    29. Scantron Analysis In our third year of administering the Scantron test with 2nd grade through 6th grade students the data easily establishes that the students have grown at least an average of 1 grade level in mathematics, reading and English language arts over that time. Our 2nd grade students established a higher baseline score than any of the three previous years in reading and ELA. For all students tested; 92% met expected gains in mathematics, 74% met expected gains in Language Arts and 68% met those gains for the reading evaluation. These scores are very promising and continue to prove that our students are making the progress that we expect. Of course there is always room for improvement and we will be using the tools provided within the Scantron programming to provide the help the students need.

    30. Scantron Performance Test Notations Having completed our third year with Scantron and established baseline scores for reading and mathematics we are pleased with the students consistent progress in reading, mathematics and language arts. We will certainly utilize the data and remediation abilities of the program to assist students in both reading and mathematics. The national “No Child Left Behind” and Michigan’s “Education Yes” initiatives focus on reading and mathematics and in both of these areas our students will benefit from the use of the Scantron diagnostic.

    31. Michigan Educational Assessment Program Michigan's MEAP tests are based on the Model Core Curriculum Outcomes and the Content Standards approved by the Michigan State Board of Education. Huron has been administering the test for ten years and have followed all guidelines as established by the Michigan Department of Education. During the 2008-09, 100% of all students in grades 3 through 6 were tested including; all males, females, economically or not economically disadvantaged, students with or without disabilities and all ethnic groups. All students were tested at Huron Academy.

    32. About the Report Long before the wide sweeping Federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind mandated that States establish assessment systems and accountability plans Michigan had in place data driven diagnostics to assess Michigan students mastery of state established standards. For many years now the Michigan Educational Assessment Program has provided public schools with the data necessary to evaluate student learning and further assess the effectiveness of classroom instruction. The purpose of this report is to disseminate for our families and the community at large the results of this years battery of testing. As required by the Michigan Department of Education we will report all disaggregate populations as well as provide helpful comparative data to fully understand the impact of the data collected. We will use graphs, charts and brief narrative in an attempt to make the data meaningful and display the successes and challenges that our students face in meeting established state standards.

    102. Closing Remarks On the entire battery of 3rd grade through 6th grade testing Huron Academy met or exceeded state standards on 9 of 18 tests which clearly illustrates room for growth and only indicates a slight drop from last years high of 10 tests. It is important to note that our students are within percentage points of state averages on most of the other tests and should continue to improve on this mark in years to come. Our State ranking among all Public School Academies is #45 with 77.4% of our students meeting or exceeding State standards. Huron’s ranking continues to improve year after year and we are confident that this numbers will continue to improve. Huron Academy ranks 3rd in Macomb county behind Mt. Clemens Montessori and Prevail Academy who were at 83% and 77.4% respectively. These are both high percentages but not out of the realm of possibility. Huron ranks 2rd among all Ferris State University authorized schools behind Marshall Academy. Marshall scored a very respectable 84.6% and Bridge just inched us out with 69.5% a mere 1.2% away from the results experienced by Huron Academy. Among local district schools in the area Huron Academy has made major progress compared to the Warren Consolidated schools. In 3rd grade testing Huron has surpassed Warren in math, 4th grade in math and reading, 5th gade in all areas except writing and finally has surpassed Warren in all areas of 6th grade testing. Significant movement toward our goal of leading all local district schools in the MEAP – Utica is next!!!
