Who We Are • Bon Secours of Maryland Foundation/ Bon Secours Baltimore Health System • Operates programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life in West Baltimore • Over 500 units of quality, affordable housing produced and over 800 tax returns filed in 2006 • Programs • Community organizing and planning • Housing development • Assistance for homeless women • GED/ABE, parenting classes and medical attention for young families • Job and financial literacy programs for adults and youth

  3. Why CWF • Community wanted people to work and save money to build a better life • Hired Goodwill to place people in jobs, but they weren’t getting ahead

Before CWF: Our Money Place Financial Service Center Basic Financial Literacy Work Supports -- Free Tax Preparation through VITA Job Placement Program Partners Goodwill- Job placement SecurityPlus FCU- basic banking Check-casher- transactional financial services What we added: Job Retention and financial training component now part of Job Placement Formal financial planning and low-cost tax preparation In Fall ‘06 began utilizing EarnBenefits to enhance work support services Implemented a coaching model as a way of interacting with clients (as opposed to traditional case management) Building Out CWF

  5. CWF Participants • 250 active participants • Typical CWF participant is an African American woman, 42 years old

  6. Headline Outcomes • Helped 146 people obtain employment • Over $50,000 in debt reduction • Almost 44% of the people we placed in employment are saving regularly • 41 people are working on improving their credit report/score • Over $27,000 in EIC obtained

  7. Lesson • This work is about economic success over time -- not job placement or financial literacy. People who have a long-term financial vision for themselves and their families take action and stick with it.
