2. 3 8 5 Culture ▶Reading Comprehension ‘Uigwe’ Exhibition Graces Late Summer A special exhibition celebrating the homecoming of royal books called “uigwe” during the Joseon Dynasty period (1392-1910) is in town. The uigwe is a unique collection of royal protocols of the Joseon Dynasty. The books show the major ceremonies and rites of the royal family with many records and illustrations. They returned home in 145 years from France after being taken by the French from Oegyujanggak in 1866. Oegyujanggak was the library for royal books built in Ganghwa Island. The uigwe was registered as the UNESCO Memory of the World in 2007 for its historical value. The exhibition is titled “The Return of the OegyujanggakUigwe from France: Records of the State Rites of the Joseon Dynasty.” It shows 71 pieces of uigwe and about 100 other historical relics.
