  1. Lecture 39 Mr. Sover 1 December 2009

  2. Pass in Homework • Do this quickly.

  3. GENETICS! • Why you look the way you do!

  4. When offspring are produced by sexual reproduction, they vary from one another and from their parents. • Recall metaphase of meiosis I…

  5. The combination of the two sets of parental chromosomes in the zygote determines its characteristics. • The passing of traits from parent to offspring is called…HEREDITY. • GENETICS is the science of heredity.

  6. The basis for genetics comes from a dude named…

  7. Gregor Mendel (1822-1884)

  8. What types of plants?

  9. Mendel studied the differences which he saw between many generations. • Mendel was trying to find trends in the numbers he was accumulating. • Quantitative data

  10. Pea plants reproduce sexually. • Usually, a pea plant will reproduce with itself.

  11. These plants will be considered pure. • Mendel made it his goal to breed plants which were opposites of each other.

  12. White pea plants mixed with purple pea plants… • Resulted in all PURPLE plants. • These offspring were called the F1 generation (filial generation).

  13. Then he bred the F1 generation together… • Of the 929 plants, 705 were purple and 224 were white. • Ratio of 3 to 1 • DOMINANT vs. RECESSIVE traits • Principle of dominance.

  14. The plant has egg and sperm. • Each sperm and egg have different characters or genes. • Mendel represented these genes by symbols. • Dominance is represented by capital letters… • The two genes combine in the fertilized egg (zygote) so that each new pea plant contains two genes for each trait.

  15. The parents were pure purple…WW (dominant) • White plants were ww (recessive) • Sperm and eggs would have one of those genes. • The gametes of purple plants would have the W gene. • The gametes of white plants would have the w gene. • All F1 plants would be…

  16. Ww! • All F1 plants would produce half their gametes with the W gene and half with the w gene. • Combining two F1 plants would result in which combination? (Ww X Ww)

  17. BUT MR. SOVER, HOW IN THE WORLD DO I FIGURE THIS OUT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!111
