  3. HyFlex Course Principles • Learner Choice: Provide meaningful alternative participation modes and enable students to choose between participation modes weekly (or topically). • Equivalency: Provide equivalent learning activities in all participation modes. • Reusability: Utilizeartifacts from learning activities in each participation mode as “learning objects’ for all students. • Accessibility: Equip students with technology skills and access to all participation modes.

  4. What is the ITEC program? • 150 graduate students pursuing Masters degree in Instructional Technologies • Courses (24) • Traditionally face to face; seminars and technology labs • Class size ranges from 8-20 • Time slots: 4-7, 7-10 PM, Mon - Thursday • Students and instructors commute; up to 60 miles or more one way

  5. Who are ITEC Students? • Most work full time • Teachers and Library / Media Specialists • Educational Software Developers • Trainers • Instructional Designers • Many in career transition • Many with families at home

  6. Why HyFlex? Student: Allows students to control the pace of their lives a little more: Adapt to changing work requirements Family requirements Regional “events” Program: Allows ITEC to serve distance students without developing a self-contained online degree program University: CSU interest in OLDPs - expanding program reach

  7. Creating Your HyFlex World • Identify learning goals • Develop instructional objectives • Create (or gather) content • Select instructional activities • Create (and communicate) clear instructions • Prepare learning supports

  10. Online Participation

  11. Participation Log Results: Face to FaceOnlineAbsent Absent Online Face to Face

  12. Survey Results: Item 8 asked students whether or not they agreed with a statement about learning as much as they expected. 27/34 (strongly) agree.

  13. How are participation mode and grade related?

  14. Survey Results: Student Comments 1 - “appreciating flexibility”

  15. Survey Results: Student Comments 2 - “online not the best”

  16. Survey Results: Student Comments 3 - “I like online.”

  17. Survey Results: Item 9 asked students what type of course delivery they preferred.

  18. Proposed Research • Learning: Do students learn more or less effectively when they have the option to choose participation mode? • Preference: Do students prefer to create their own blend of learning activities? • Effort: Does a HyFlex course require more effort from the instructor or student? • Which courses, instructors, and students are candidates for HyFlex design?
