  1. FY2015 OPERATIONAL Grants Bidder’s Conference January 9, 2014

  2. Agenda • Welcome and Introductions • Strategic Planning Overview • 2014 Investment Framework • Community Operational Grant • Process • Timeline • RAVEN System • Due Diligence Documents • Grant Application Form • 5. Other Ways You Can Partner With UWCM • 6. Questions & Answers

  3. UWCM Theory of Change “In order to have strong, stable communities, families within those communities must be strong and stable. This requires housing, financial stability, good health and quality education to be present and available for these families: the basic building blocks of self-sufficiency. By targeting resources in identified high need communities while ensuring the safety net across the region remains effective, the trajectory can be changed for these families and ultimately their communities.”

  4. What We Heard… STAY THE COURSE: • Stick to “core DNA” of basic needs • Continue to be a trusted, efficient fundraiser • Balance regional initiatives with local action and individual engagement • Build affinity for our own initiatives with giving “to United Way” as a conscious choice BASIC NEEDS

  5. Where We Are Going… CONTINUE REGIONAL INITIATIVES (HORIZONTAL PROGRAMS): • 2-1-1 Maryland at UWCM • Shelter Diversion* • Access to Healthy Food • Read. Learn. Succeed. *These regional initiatives are funded through a combination of grants and campaign dollars except for Shelter Diversion which is all major donor funded.

  6. Where We Are Going… CONTINUE BASIC NEEDS SAFETY NET SUPPORT THROUGH LOCAL ACTION: • Evolve Partnership Boards: increased flexibility to respond to immediate needs & make longer-term investments aligned to family stability • Give Partnership Boards discretion to decide how much to allocate to each type of grant and/or to eliminate a grant type • Annual Operating Grants up to $25K • Quarterly Emergency Response Grants up to $7.5K • Multi-year “Signature Impact Grants” in amounts TBD

  7. Where We Are Going… SLOWLY BROADEN AND DEEPEN PLACE-BASED FAMILY STABILITY WORK: • Don’t get ahead of ourselves • Guidelines for expansion: • Recognize we are a regional organization serving all of central MD • Act only as funding is available and secured • Select sites based on documented need • Ensure selection has support of local Partnership Board as its “Signature Issue” • Convene new initiatives in just 4 more sites short-term Family Stability

  8. Summary of Actions: Mission & Vision Mission remains the same: Mobilize the community to improve people’s lives Value proposition articulated: We envision that one day - “All central Marylanders have the opportunity to attain a quality education, financial stability, housing, good health and self-sufficiency.” Family Stability

  9. Summary of Actions: Major Goals 2014-16 Goals: 1. Advance the basic needs building blocks of education, financial stability and health to help families facing poverty achieve self-sufficiency. 2. Be an efficient, effective and trusted fundraiser.
