Acids & Bases. Neutralisation. Acids & Bases are ionic compounds. Acids & Bases ionise in water. Acid in water: HCl ( aq ) -> H + ( aq ) + Cl - ( aq ) Base in water: NaOH ( aq ) -> Na + ( aq ) + OH - ( aq ) This means the ions can then mix together to form other compounds.

  3. Acids & Bases ionise in water Acid in water: HCl(aq) -> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) Base in water: NaOH(aq)-> Na+(aq) + OH-(aq) This means the ions can then mix together to form other compounds

  4. Acid + Base -> Salt + Water When an acid is mixed with a base, a neutralisation reaction takes place, producing a salt + water. Eg. Chemical equation HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> NaCl(s) + H2O(aq) Word equation: hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide -> sodiumchloride + water

  6. While you’re evaporating the solution… Read from your textbook about; • strong and weak acids, • concentrated and dilute solutions of acids and bases Draw four diagrams to represent each of the above
