  1. Human Challenges to EcosystemsAir Qualityhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iThpkXWVeqE Mrs. Donohue

  2. 1. What is smog? • A. a type of air pollution from the waste products of burned gas, coal and oil that has particulates in it and • ground-level ozone.

  3. 2. What are particulates? • A. Microscopic bits of dust, metal and unburned fuel. • 1. Why do we care? • B. Breathing air with particulates causes breathing problems

  4. 3. What is “good” ozone? • A. Ozone is 03 • B. Good ozone is in the upper atmosphere • Filters UV light from the sun that would damage plants and animals

  5. 4. What is “bad” ozone? • A. ground level ozone is bad • B. Nitrous Oxide (NO) from car motors reacts with the oxygen in the air to make ground level ozone • C. Damages the lungs of people

  6. 5. What is acid rain? • Chemicals from the burning of oil and coal become part of the water cycle • Causes the rain to become acidic • Harms ecosystems • Harms water supplies

  7. 6. How is air pollution changing the Earth’s Biosphere? • A. Carbon Dioxide is part of the Earth’s atmosphere • 1. levels rise and fall naturally • 2. When carbon dioxide levels are high, it is warmer • 3. When carbon dioxide levels are lower, it is cooler

  8. 7. What does carbon dioxide have to do with the “greenhouse effect”? • A. Earth has gases that slow the loss of heat from the Earth • B. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor and methane form a blanket over the Earth and keep it warm to support life

  9. 8. How does the greenhouse effect relate to “global warming”? • Global warming is the trend of increasing temperatures because of the increase in greenhouse gases. • Increases in gases come from cars, industry and other activities. • Threatens ecosystems • Increased flooding • Melting polar ice caps

  10. 9. Water pollution is another problem • Scientists determine health of an ecosystem by looking at “indicator species”. • Frogs are good indicators • Frogs grow tumors, extra arms and legs in polluted waters

  11. 10. How are pollutants measured? • Some pollutants stay in body fat • Pollutants that move up the food chain are called “biomagnification” • Pollutants accumulate in the organisms highest in the food chain.
