  2. RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION • Considers itself to be pointing towards the truth but not prescribing any one way to achieve it. • However: persistent Hundu-Muslim violence dating back to the Muslim invasion of India around 1000 AD. • Muslim Invasion of India

  3. SEXISM • Awide variety of attitudes to women, ranging from outright discrimination to women playing major roles in religious systems. PARVATI SHAKTI LAKSHMI

  4. SEXISM • However, girls are still often unwanted, maltreated and aborted. Rape is widespread and horrific. • Newborn Girls Murdered • Gang Rape

  5. HOMOSEXUALITY Widespread and often violent homophobia. Homosexuality is a criminal offence punishable with up to a lifetime in jail. Gay Persecution

  6. RACE AND CLASS DISCRIMINATION • Traditionally, Hinduism supported a rigid order of castes, one of the world’s worst systems of social oppression.

  8. BUDDHISM • NOT a social reform movement: Gautama recognised the caste system • HOWEVER, Buddhist monks are drawn from all castes without distinction and form a group outside the caste system

  9. SIKHISM • A radical social reform movement • Guru Nanak, 16th century: one God, no Muslim/Hindu, man/woman, rich/poor. Complete equality of race, religion, gender and social status.
