  1. RFID Lab @ CASIA 中国科学院自动化研究所 RFID研究中心 2008.3.1

  2. Brief of CASIA • CASIA: Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) • Founded in 1956, focusing on Automatic Control and Information Processing • Key member institute of CAS “Knowledge Innovation Program ” • RFID Research Center of CASIA, established in July 2004, leadership of the first two RFID projects funded by National “863” Hi-Tech Program • RFID Test Center – leading position in China

  3. RFID Test and Its Extend Phases

  4. SMEs are worried about… • Whether or not RFID hardware performance (effective radiated power, frequency etc.) meets the local regulations • How to select RFID devices that can fit the specific application requirements • How to deploy RFID hardware in real environment to achieve maximum efficiency How to deploy a RFID system becomes increasingly important due to the variety of RFID technology and complexity of its application environment

  5. Challenges in RFID deployment • Frequency is different in different countries, and RFID hardware performance is changed with different central frequency • Environment influences RFID hardware performance • tag attaching material: paper, wood, plastic, metal, liquid • antenna installation: orientation, distance, height • tag placement, number of tags, tag moving speed • uncertain factors in real environment • Difficulties in on-site deployment • tag-antenna matching: labor and time consuming, lack of experiences • reader (antenna) number: cost a lot, difficult to deploy all for testing • Furthermore, what is “good” solution is application-specific—ROI analysis needed

  6. Challenges in RFID deployment To build a knowledge base for robust RFID solution models with common sense that can be leveraged upon across industries and different deployments, thus shortening the learning cycle, deployment time and reducing cost. It is an important reference for SMEs to learn RFID and to deploy RFID.

  7. Simulated/on-site Test test data acquisition modeling deployment simulation Experimental frame specifies conditions under which the system is experimented with and observed Motivation Software for executing model Real System Simulator Model Structure for modeling devices and events claimed to represent real system

  8. Two tasks • RFID benchmarking test • oriented to various products, various environment, various applications, in order to collect valuable raw data. • RFID deployment simulator • in order to utilize the test results, it analyzes test data using data mining and machine learning technologies, in order that customers could know the application effect in a visual way, and provides ROI report to remove the customers worries before they deploy RFID.

Visual User Interface Interactiveuser-directeddeployment Optimal schemes of deployment Evaluation and Optimization Simulation and Deployment (to generate solution) Modeling (tag, reader, antenna, environment factors) Test Data DB Configuration Profile Repository Real time Data Acquisition Real Environment The Architecture

  17. Deployment Scheme Scheme: add reader3 for reader1; add reader4 for reader2. Event = ( READ(reader1, reader3)>=1 ) AND ( READ(reader2, reader4)>=1 ) Result: event success rate = 98% event success rate can be improved by a better deployment scheme.

  18. Model world Real world replace model with real system replace model with real system Models (software simulation) Models and real systems (test-in-the-loop simulation) Real systems (field test) update model update model Final system measurement & evaluation Progressive Test-based Deployment

  19. The Global RF Lab Alliance - GRFLA A network of excellence among international RF Lab (The Global RF Lab Alliance, GRFLA ). • Parma University, Italy • University of Bremen • University of Arkansas • HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) • CASIA • …

  20. Cooperative suggestions • RFID Benchmarking Consortium joint testing • Test data and experiences sharing • Test data analyzing, modeling, data mining, machine learning  the robust knowledge database • RFID deployment support software for solution generating
