  2. The History of Skiing • There are many types of skiing, but we will focus on the classic cross-country skiing (mid picture).

The History of Skiing • The word ski goes back to the Old Norse word skíð meaning «a piece of wood» • The first hints to the existence of skis are on 4500 to 5000 year old rock drawings • The first skis were wooden planks, but modern skis are made of complex components such as glass fiber and plastic.

  4. Ski Poles • Ages ago they used just a single ski pole while skiing, nowadays we usually use a pair of poles. • When used in cross-country skiing, poles enable the user to gain more speed than by using the skies alone, as well as offering improved balance.

  5. Skiing in Norway • Cross-country skiing is the national sport of Norway. • Norwegians are often referred to as having been born with skis on their feet

  6. Skiing as a Hobby When it is winter in Norway it is common to spend the weekends and vacations to go skiing in ski tracks. The ski tracks are located in the mountains, the forests or open areas like fields. How long the ski trips last all depends on you, you decide if you want to go for a long trip or a shorter one. It’s common to spend several hours in the beautiful Norwegian landscape.

  7. Easter Holiday – the ultimate ski experience! In the Easter holiday, many families and friends travel up to the mountains where we live in cottages/cabins and take ski trips of course.

  8. When we go for a longer ski trip we usually take a break during the trip. In the break we eat oranges and a chocolate bar which is called “Kvikk Lunsj”. In English it means: a quick lunch. We often sit in the snow and try to get a little tan. As you see in the picture.

  9. Winter Olympics • The winter Olympics in 1994 were held in Lillehammer in Norway. Then we had official Olympics mascots. • Norway sometimes hosts the world cup in skiing. The Norwegian skiers have taken many gold medals. Olympic mascots ’94 Opening ceremony at Lillehammer ’94

  10. Norwegian Skiers • Norwegians are very proud of their athletes in cross-country skiing and biathlon.
