  2. Born on 21 August 1930 at Glannis Castle in Scotland. The youngest daughterof Prince Albert, Duke of York and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She was baptised in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on 30 October 1930

The Duchess of York originally wanted the names Ann Margaret, as she explained to Queen Mary in a letter: "I am very anxious to call her Ann Margaret, as I think Ann of York sounds pretty and Elizabeth and Ann go so well together.“ King George V disliked the name Ann, but approved of the alternative "Margaret Rose".

  4. Margaret spent much of her childhood years in the company of her older sister and parents. In 1936 her life changed dramatically because her paternal uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated to marry the divorced American Wallis Simpson

  5. In course of thatMargaret's father became King in Edward's place.

  6. Her older sister became heiress presumptive with Margaret second in line to the throne. During World War II two sisters did not evacuate to Canada and in spite of public or official duties Margaret continued her education

  7. Margaret's first love was divorced commoner 16 years her elder, Group Captain Peter Townsend. • Many in the government felt that Townsend would be an unsuitable husband for the Queen's 22-year-old sister and theydidnotmarried.

  8. In 1960 she accepted the proposal of the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, who was created Earl of Snowdon by Elizabeth II. • Marriagesoon became unhappy. The couple divorced in 1978 and Margaret never remarried.

  9. She had smoked cigarettes since at least the age of 15. 1985she had part of her left lung removed. In January 1993 she had pneumonia. She experienced a mild stroke in 1998. Shedied in London, on 9 February 2002 at the age of 71. ILLNESS AND DEATH
