How to tap this potential? • Find young women active and interested in computing pre-college (low-hanging fruit) • Recognize their aspirations and achievements • Inform about future education and jobs • Support them along the educational path with: Information, Scholarships, Internships, Jobs, Mentors, After-school/summer Programs, Peer Networks Keep them IN the computing pipeline!

NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing • Identify, recognize and encourage young women for their IT aspirations and achievements • Build and support IT workforce talent pool • National award with local affiliate system • Provide peer networking through Facebook group – mitigating girls’ isolation experience • Build direct relationships among girls interested in computing with universities and employers

  25. Aspire IT • Connects high school and college women with K-12 girls interested in computing • Program Leaders (former awardees) teach them computing and computational thinking is FUN! • Aimed at other girls (mainly middle school)

  26. Aspire IT • NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing awardees can apply. • Join with a non-profit and create an opportunity (eg, workshop, club, summer program). • Request up to $3000 to run the program.

Aspirations in Computing Program: Collegiate Award • Honors outstanding technical accomplishments of college women • Sponsored by Hewlett Packard and Qualcomm • Winners receive an engraved plaque, $10,000 and a trip to the NCWIT Summit • Honorable Mentions receive a certificate and $2500 • In 2016 there were 6 Winners and 12 Honorable Mentions

Aspirations in Computing Program: Educator Award • Publicly celebrates educators who encourage high school women’s interest and participation in technology pursuits. • Sponsored by AT&T • Awards: • $1000 ($250 cash, $750 for PD activities) • Recognition at local Aspirations Affiliate • An Engraved award for both the educator and the winner’s school
