  2. ORNHBackground Increase the number of graduating physicians and other health care professionals who choose rural and northern Manitoba as a place to live and practice their professions

  3. Who is involved? Project Coordinator Regional Health Authorities of Manitoba (RHAM) Funding Agency Manitoba Health The ORNH is an active partner with a variety of health care stakeholders including employers, academic institutions and professional associations.

  4. What part of the province are we responsible for?

  5. THE PAST In Manitoba … All components of recruitment were the responsibility of each individual region No coordinator to liaise with students No consistent rural/northern advocate No caretaker of the bigger picture

  12. Job Shadowing • No consistent policy throughout the province until we raised it as an issue. • All regions will now host local students for job shadows. • Target is high school students

  13. Presentations - get into classroom Here’s what is going on in the work world … “this is boring” …bringing the info stats to their level How “boomers” & retirements create opportunity How people use health care – demographics create opportunity ++ giveaways, shared stories,…

  14. Classroom Presentations Focus on career planning Opportunities in health care as a result of demographics Characteristics of health care providers Range of opportunities in the health care sector Information on how the ORNH can help with their pursuit of a health care career

  15. Promotional Giveaways All materials have the tag line… Health Care is a Career for Life ORNH provides the majority of these materials for career fair events and presentations.

  17. Northern Presence Manitoba’s North is a unique area of the province Partnership with the three northern RHAs ORNH provides financial support for the regions to dedicate a portion of staff time to ORNH priorities Group identified early career awareness as a priority project

  21. Health Career Quest - Summer Camp • 12 day summer camp experience to be piloted in summer 2008 • Targeting northern Aboriginal students • Three components to the camp • Career exposure • Academic assessment & remediation • Life skills training

Home for the Summer Program The ORNH has agreed to 50/50 cost share with RHAs one summer student position • Student originates from the area • Student is currently enrolled in a health care training program that is a future HR need for the region. • The position for the student will be both an educational and work placement. • The work of the position will include a project that adds to the knowledge of the region about recruitment & retention
