Project Objectives • Improve the knowledge base and establish regional strategies for the reduction of stress to the marine and coastal ecosystem by improving water and sediment quality • Strengthen regional legal basis for preventing land-based sources of pollution • Develop regional capacity for sustainable, less polluting development, including implementation of the Nairobi Convention and its action plan UNEP/GEF WIO-LaB Project

The WIO-LaB demonstration projects The WIO-LaB demonstration projects are intended to demonstrate innovative, appropriate and cost-effective technical and managerial approaches for addressing the impacts of land-based sources and activities. A wetland-lagoon system for wastewater management at Shimo La Tewa Prison, Kenya Development of eco-tourism in the Marine Park of Toliara - Madagascar Community based mangrove forest management - Mozambique UNEP/GEF WIO-LaB Project

Capacity building Based on a training needs assessment conducted by WIOMSA • Water and sediment quality sampling and analysis (3x) • Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Legal aspects of LBS/A Management • Leadership in Environmental Management • TDA and SAP • Marine Environmental Governance • MWW Management (planned) UNEP/GEF WIO-LaB Project

Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis and Strategic Action Programme (TDA/SAP) A key output from the WIO-LaB project will be a geographically bound Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis and Strategic Action Programme (TDA/SAP) for the Western Indian Ocean Region, focusing on Land-based Sources and Activities.   16. Nairobi Convention Clearinghouse Mechanism A one-stop information portal on coastal and marine environment information for the WIO Region Linked to the GPA CHM and ODINAFRICA Marine Atlases Project (OMAP) UNEP/GEF WIO-LaB Project

Nairobi Convention Clearinghouse Mechanism • Activities undertaken so far: • Development of an Information Management Strategy for the Eastern Africa Coastal and Marine Regional CHM • Workshop on the Development of a CHM on the Eastern African Coastal and Marine Environment: 9-11 May 2006, Nairobi • Appointment of National CHM Focal Institutions (NFI) and establishment of National Working Groups • Development of basic CHM system/infrastructure • Individual country visits to each NFI by UNEP/DEWA • Training workshop on the development of the Nairobi Convention CHM, 13-17 August 2007, Mauritius • Establishment of Memorandums of Understanding and Procurement of servers for each of the Focal Institutions • Official launch of the CHM during the 5th Conference of Parties of the Nairobi Convention UNEP/GEF WIO-LaB Project
