  1. Respiration (cellular) • Process in which cells use oxygen to break down food molecules to release energy (ATP)

  3. Chemical Equation- C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)

  4. Reactants • Glucose (C6H12O6) • Organisms receive from carbohydrates taken in • Product of photosynthesis

  5. Reactants • Oxygen (O2) • Organisms receive from their environment, air, water, soil • Product of photosynthesis

  6. Products- • Carbon dioxide (CO2) • Released from the organism into their environment, air, water, soil (breathing/gas exchange)

  7. Products- • Water (H2O) • Also released from the organism into their environment

  8. Energy (ATP) • Aerobic respiration produces a total of 38 ATP for every molecule of glucose

  9. Organelle • Cytoplasm • Mitochondria

  11. Step 1- • Glycolysis • Occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell • Does not use oxygen • Uses 2 molecules of ATP • Produces 4 molecules of ATP • Net gain of 2 molecules ATP • Glucose broken down to produce Pyruvic Acid

  12. Step 2- Respiration • Respiration • Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell • Involves the Krebs cycle • Involves an electron transport chain • Uses oxygen • Produces 34 molecules of ATP

  13. Aerobic Respiration Summary • Total process produces 38 ATP • Requires 2 ATP • Net gain of 36 ATP

  14. Anaerobic Respiration/Fermentation • Respiration without oxygen

  15. Anaerobic Respiration/Fermentation • Requires 2 molecules of ATP • Produces 4 molecules of ATP • Net gain of 2 molecules of ATP

  16. 2 Types • Alcohol fermentation- bakers & brewers- products are carbon dioxide and alcohol • Lactic acid fermentation- in muscle cells, causes soreness and fatigue in muscle
