Today’s Objectives • Identify challenges posed by competing claims in the Northwest Territory and by the Whiskey Rebellion and how they were resolved. • List reasons why the new nation remained neutral in European conflicts and how that position affected foreign relations.
Problems at Home • Competing Claims to Territory • Northwest Territory • Land bounded by Ohio River, Miss. River, & Great Lakes. • To claim land Washington • Sent troops 2X, defeated both • Sent “Mad Anthony”
Battle of Fallen Timbers • 1794 battle between Native Americans & American forces. • Americans-*WINNERS!* • RESULT • Treaty of Greenville • 1795 treaty, 12 Native American Tribes surrendered control of much of Ohio & Indiana to the U.S. gov’t.
Trouble in Backcountry • Hamilton put tax on whiskey to raise $ • Farmers use corn to make whiskey • To make MORE $ • Whiskey heart of economy • Farmers Revolt • • Whiskey Rebellion • 1794 protest against gov’ts tax on whiskey by backcountry farmers.
SHOW THEM WHO’S BOSS • Washington sent 13,000 troops to put down uprising. • Rebels fled, G.Wash proved point
Problems Abroad • The French Revolution • Revolution over throwing the gov’t in France, began in 1787 and ended in violence @ mass executions.

Jefferson • Attack on liberty if we side w/ Britain • (that’s what France was fighting for) • Hamilton • Trade with Britain is too important to side w/ France • (cannot risk losing them, vital to economy) • Washington • REMAIN NEUTRAL- not to take sides.
Jay’s Treaty • Agreement that ended the dispute with Britain over American shipping during the French Revolution. • British left Ohio River Valley • British pay 4 damage to U.S. vessels seized • Pinckney’s Treaty • 1795 treaty w/ Spain allowing U.S. commercial use of the Miss. River.
