  6. The Basics: What is the Framework Programme • Framework Programmes have been operating since 1984 • EC’s mechanism for funding research and technological development • Designed to generate new knowledge, new technologies and new intellectual property for Europe to compete with China, India, USA and Japan • Previous Framework Programmes have focussed on industrial competitiveness and specific themes such as IT, energy, environment, agriculture and health. These themes and many others are still in FP7 c Beta Technology

  7. The Basics: Framework Programme Seven • Runs 2007-2013 • Budget €50.5 billion • Building Europe’s knowledge and the European Research Area • Improve competitiveness • Resolve society’s problems • The biggest research programme in the world c Beta Technology

  8. The Basics: Funding Fundamentals • Highly competitive application process • Innovative collaborative projects • Topics identified by the work programme • In response to a call for proposals • SME involvement is encouraged • Involves partners from multiple countries - at least 3 c Beta Technology

  9. FP7 in Detail: The Structure c Beta Technology

  10. FP7 Budgets Budget in € million c Beta Technology

  11. FP7 in Detail: Funding Schemes • Collaborative Projects • Research projects with the aim of generating new knowledge and technology • Size and scope can vary • Network of Excellence • Join together a group of organisations around a common theme • Integrate research activities and resources • Coordination and Support Actions • Non R&D activity to support research c Beta Technology

  12. FP7 in Detail: Maximum Funding Rates • Research and technological activities: – 50% of eligible costs except for: • Public bodies: 75% • Secondary and higher education establishments: 75% • Research organisations (non-profit): 75% • SMEs: 75% • Demonstration activities: 50% of eligible costs • Other activities: 100% including e.g. management • Coordination and support actions:100% (+7% Indirect) • Receipts are taken into account to determine the final Community financial contribution c Beta Technology

  20. Activity 3 - Environmental Technologies Environmental technologies for observation, simulation, prevention, mitigation, adaptation, remediation & restoration of the natural & man made environment • Water • Public-Private Partnership 'Green Cars': Cross-Thematic cooperation between NMP, Energy, Environment (including Climate Change) and Transport (including Aeronautics) • Public-Private Partnership 'Energy efficient Buildings‘: Cross-thematic cooperation between NMP, ICT, Energy and Environment (including climate change) c Beta Technology

  21. Activity 3 - Environmental Technologies Environmental technologies for observation, simulation, prevention, mitigation, adaptation, remediation & restoration of the natural & man made environment • Eco-innovation • Three specified topics • One bottom up topic with a budget of €44 million to fund many proposals • Proposals should address: • The development of system solutions, in production processes or consumption of goods and services and they should maximise eco-efficiency • The development of novel eco-efficient environmental technologies (including monitoring) whose direct or indirect use can substantially contribute to the reduction of materials and resource use, energy consumption, polluting emissions, etc. c Beta Technology

  22. Activity 3 - Environmental Technologies Protection, conservation & enhancement of cultural heritage, including human habitat • Assessment and conservation in cultural heritage • Networking, knowledge transfer and optimisation of results in cultural heritage c Beta Technology

  23. Activity 4 - Earth Observation & Assessment Tools Earth and ocean observation systems and monitoring methods for the environment and sustainable development • Integration of European activities within GEO • Earth Observation activities in emerging areas • Developing capacity building activities in the domain of Earth Observation in the new EU countries and in the developing countries c Beta Technology

  24. Activity 4 - Earth Observation & Assessment Tools Forecasting methods and assessment tools for sustainable development taking into account differing scales of observation • Tools for impact assessment • Sustainable development indicators • Interplay between social, economic and ecological systems c Beta Technology

  34. Topic number Topic title Topic description ENV.2011.1.2.2-1 Combined exposures to environmental agents: integrated approaches to evaluate environment-health relationships in children Recent studies have suggested that even very low doses of some biologically active contaminants including toxic chemicals in the environment can alter gene expression important to learning and developmental function. Exposures during early development can adversely affect learning and development of the individual and last a lifetime, with huge economic and social consequences. Humans are exposed to complex mixtures of environmental contaminants that can interact to enhance adverse effects. The aim of the project is to develop better and sophisticated tools, procedures and testing methods to screen compounds for neurotoxicity and to improve assessment of exposures and effects. SMEs in the biotechnology area can play a key role and therefore, their participation is encouraged. Timing of exposure, the role of bioaccumulation and mixtures, mechanisms of disease development and the role of individual susceptibility should be examined using latest biotechnology tools available. SMEs in the biotechnology area can play a key role and therefore their participation is encouraged…… Funding scheme: Collaborative Project (large-scale integrating project) Additional eligibility criterion:SME-targeted Collaborative Projects will only be selected for funding on the condition that the estimated EU contribution going to SME(s) is 15% or more of the total estimated EC contribution for the project as a whole. This will be assessed at the end of the negotiation, before signature of the grant agreement. Proposals not fulfilling this criterion will not be funded. Expected Impact: Support for reduction of health inequalities, environmental sustainability and justice, including the goals of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy with its environment and public health components. Support for the goals of the EU and WHO environment and health process and EU chemicals legislation as well as Council conclusions on combination effects of chemicals (2009). Reducing uncertainty of risk assessments.
