  1. Non-Objective Art How to create a content driven sculpture

  2. Developing a content statement • What message do I want to communicate through the sculpture? • What is the subject of the sculpture? (sometimes this is the same as the message, sometimes it is a symbol, it should always be closely connected) • Write a clear statement defining your purpose. This document will guide your work. The depth, clarity and beauty of your statement will be reflected in the finished artwork. Bird in Space, Constantine Brancusi

  3. Planning the sculpture • How can I use the elements and principles of art to make the subject known and the content understood? (you will need to explore a number of color thumbnail sketches to determine what works) • How do I overcome the limitations of the medium? (list the limiting factors and have a plan for how to deal with each)

  4. Steps in the ProcessStep 1 • Select the subject. The sculpture represents something that can be described. What form will you use to connect with the viewers knowledge? I want to communicate the message of the importance of family and the strength of the bond between us. I want everyone to know how much we love and support each other. We’re united and therefore, we’re strong.

  5. Step 2 • Simplify, or change the subject to meet the demands of the medium. • Create a symbol that represents the concept.

  6. Step 3 • How do I manipulate the elements of art to best communicate the message and replicate this subject? • Line (edges) • Shape/Size • Space (positive and negative) • Color • Texture • Value (lights and shadows)

  7. Step 4 How do I apply the Principles of Art to create the desired response? • Balance (a function of proportion and relationships) • Emphasis (focal point) • Rhythm (through repetition or pattern) • Variety • Harmony • Contrast • Unity (the Gestalt)

  8. Step 5 • Adapt your plan to seize the opportunities of the medium while adjusting it to compensate for the restrictions it will impose! • You’re juggling a LOT of balls, some will get dropped. • When presented with a challenge… ADAPT AND OVERCOME! • Hold tight to the original content statement, it is the one thing you will not want to compromise.

  9. Overview • Content Statement • Subject • Simplification • Employment of the Elements and Principles • Modifications for media • Production of a content driven sculpture
