  2. What IS the Five Star Program? • It is: • A chapter business plan. • A plan of action. • A way for your chapter to get organized. • A plan for setting your chapter’s annual goals. • A record of what you have accomplished.

  3. What is required? One Star Level: • The One Star Level standards emphasize the organization of the chapter and the orientation of members and advisors. • Chapters can work on multiple levels of the Five Star Program at the same time.

  4. One Star Level Requirements: • Chapter officers and advisor(s) review the Five Star Chapter Development Program requirements and determine a goal to reach within the year. The goal should be submitted on the Chapter Update Form on Phi Theta Kappa’s website at www.ptk.org/fivestar/. 2. Advisor and chapter president each have a Chapter Resource Packet, including the Chapter Resource Manual, the Program Guides on the Honors Study Topic and International Service Program, Hallmark Awards Brochure, Recognitions Brochure, etc. (Resource Packets are available through the Membership Services Department). 3. Chapter bylaws have been approved and are on file at Headquarters. Bylaws do not need to be revise or resubmitted each year, but they should be reviewed. Check the online Chapter Directory to determine when your bylaws were approved by Headquarters. Sample chapter bylaws are available online. 4. Submit new officer names, addresses, and emails by completing a Chapter Officer Reporting Form.

  5. One Star Continued… 5. Your chapter provides a structured orientation for any new officers, advisors, and committee chairs at the beginning of each semester or quarter. Review chapter calendar and budget as part of the orientation. 6. Your college president or the president's representative sends an invitation letter to eligible students encouraging them to join. Things to include: • Invitation to a new member orientation. • A Phi Theta Kappa Member Benefits Brochure, available free of charge from the Recognition Services Department, • Information about the induction ceremony.

Chapter employs strategies to gain positive visibility and greater public awareness on your campus by: • Promoting the importance of membership to faculty by providing a list of eligible students along with Phi Theta Kappa’s Faculty Awareness Flyer (www.ptk.org/chapters/facultyflyer.pdf),OR • Displaying a Member Benefits Brochure or Phi Theta Kappa posters on one or more campus bulletin boards,OR • Sending a news release announcing new inductees to a community or campus newspaper. (Phi Theta Kappa promotional ads are available online.) OR • D) Participating in one or more activities during Phi Theta Kappa’s “Good as Gold Week.”

  7. One Star Continued… 8. Chapter conducts an orientation for prospective members prior to induction. (A member recruitment video and PowerPoint Presentation are available on the Chapter Resources DVD sent to all chapter advisors, or visit www.ptk.org/advisor/campaign. 9. Your chapter promotes membership acceptance by employing one of the following strategies: A) Conducting a phone-a-thon to eligible students,ORB) Sending a reminder email to eligible students who have not accepted membership,ORC) Utilizing the online membership acceptance feature in PAM,ORD) Providing more than one opportunity for prospective members to attend an orientation during each recruitment campaign.

  8. One Star Continued… 10. Chapter conducts at least one induction ceremony. For guidelines, see the Chapter Resource Manual or visit www.ptk.org/chapters/resources/members/inductplan.htm. All members should be reported and international/regional fees submitted to Headquarters within 30 days of collecting student fees. 11. Chapter meets at least once a month during the academic year. During chapter meetings, advisors and members discuss chapter business and items of interest from Phi Theta Kappa's electronic communications, website, and publications. 12. Advisor submits the Chapter Annual Report to Headquarters. It is available under Chapter Management at PAM. The 2006-07 Annual Report is due June 29, 2007. 13. Chapter submits its Chapter Update Form online by April 30, September 30, November 30 and February 1, 2008. Five Star Forms can be found at www.ptk.org/fivestar.

  9. Two Star Level Two Star Level standards emphasize more formal planning, service to the college and community, and participation in the Honors Study Topic and International Service Program. The chapter must fulfill all One Star Level standards and the following Two Star Level requirements to reach the Two Star Level. Activities may be completed in any order.

  10. Two Star Level Requirements: 1. Chapter meets at least twice a month during the academic year. Your chapter can have: A) one chapter officer meeting and one general chapter meeting OR B) two general chapter meetings. 2. Chapter holds an induction ceremony at least twice during the year. One induction can be held during a regularly-scheduled chapter meeting; however, at least one induction ceremony should be a more formal event. For guidelines, see the Chapter Resource Manual or visit www.ptk.org/chapters/resources/members/inductplan.htm. 3. Your chapter implements at least ONE activity using the current Honors Study Topic, which involves more than one member.

  11. Two Star Continued… 4. Chapter officially registers as a Chapter of Service and implements at least ONE activity using the current International Service Program. Visit the Chapters of Service Directory at http://www.ptk.org/service/track-your-chapters-progress to determine if your chapter is already registered. The activity must involve more than one member. 5. Chapter assumes the responsibility of working with another chapter OR your chapter collaborates with one or more campus or community organizations in sponsoring an event consistent with the mission of Phi Theta Kappa. 6. Advisor and chapter officers meet with the college president (or another appropriate administrator) to discuss chapter goals.

  12. Three Star Level Three Star Level standards emphasize further development of Honors Study Topic and International Service Program activities, and also the implementation of a college project designed to promote the goals of your college. The chapter must fulfill all One Star, Two Star, and Three Star Level requirements to reach the Three Star Level. Activities may be completed in any order.

  13. Three Star Level Requirements 1. Chapter implements at least two Honors Study Topic projects, each involving more than one member. 2. Chapter implements at least two International Service Program projects, each involving more than one member. 3. Chapter publishes a newsletter OR maintains a chapter website OR submits chapter news to a publication and sends this published information to your Regional Coordinator and to Chapter Programs Assistant Amanda Lewis at Headquarters.

  14. Three Star Continued… 4. Chapter implements a College Project, determined by the chapter and college president. Your chapter must submit the College Project Form to Headquarters when the project is completed. 5. Chapter chronicles its activities for historical purposes. Examples include maintaining a notebook of chapter newsletters and/or meeting minutes, compiling a chapter yearbook, keeping a file of Hallmark Awards entries that detail the chapter's activities, or using another form of record-keeping for posterity.

  15. The College Project • Honors Satellite Seminar Series • Project Graduation • Community College Readership Program • College Ambassadors. • Assist with registration or graduation. • Voice your Vote. • Campus cleanup. • Tutoring. • Innovative ideas for your college. • Complete and submit the College Project Form online!

  16. Four Star Level Four Star Level standards emphasize greater participation at the campus and regional levels. The chapter must fulfill all One Star, Two Star, Three Star, and Four Star Level requirements to reach the Four Star Level. Activities may be completed in any order.

  17. Four Star Requirements: • At least one chapter representative attends at least one official regional meeting during the calendar year. • Your chapter assumes a leadership role in your region by: A) campaigning for a regional office OR B) hosting or assuming a leadership role at a regional meeting OR C) hosting a fellowship event that includes representatives of at least two other chapters and includes a service, scholarship, or leadership component. 3. Your chapter implements at least three Honors Study Topic activities, each involving more than one member. At least one of the activities must incorporate the Leadership and Fellowship Hallmarks. Example: By hosting a panel discussion to discuss the role of geography in the conflicts of the Middle East (Leadership) and inviting the campus and community to attend (Fellowship), a chapter has met this requirement for the Honors Study Topic.

  18. Four Star Continued… 4. Chapter implements at least three International Service Program activities , each involving more than one member. At least one of these projects must incorporate the Leadership and Fellowship Hallmarks. Example: Establish a recycling program on campus (Leadership) and share the responsibilities of sustaining the program with other campus organizations (Fellowship). PLEASE NOTE: Your Honors Study Topic and International Service Program projects should reach out to as many individuals as possible, including your campus, community, and region. 5. Your chapter enters at least two chapter Hallmark Awards (Scholarship, Leadership, or Service) in your 2008 regional awards competition.

  19. Five Star Level Five Star Level standards emphasize increased participation at the regional and international levels. The chapter must fulfill all One Star, Two Star, Three Star, Four Star and Five Star Level requirements to reach the Five Star Level. Activities may be completed in any order.

  20. Five Star Requirements • Your chapter implements at least four Honors Study Topic projects. At least two of these projects must incorporate the Leadership and Fellowship Hallmarks. 2. Your chapter implements at least four International Service Program projects. At least two of these projects must incorporate the Leadership and Fellowship Hallmarks. 3. Your chapter enters the Scholarship, Leadership, and Service award categories in the 2008 regional awards competition.

  21. Five Star Continued… 4. Your chapter enters at least four 2008 International Hallmark Awards (Scholarship, Leadership, Service and at least one individual category). 5. Your chapter participates in one of the following:A) International Convention B) International Honors Institute C) All four broadcasts of the 2007 Honors Satellite Seminar Series.

  22. Ten Easy Steps To Five Star Participation 1. Have your chapter read the Five Star Program Guide. 2. Review the requirements for each star level. 3. Determine a realistic goal for your chapter to reach within the year. 4. Plan activities that are meaningful for your chapter. 5. Schedule those activities in your chapter calendar. 6. Delegate responsibility for implementation of the planned activities. 7. Reassess progress at chapter meetings.

  23. 8. Submit Five Star Update Forms at www.ptk.org/fivestar/. 9. Submit the College Project Form if applying for Level Three. • Submit chapter updates online by April 30, September 30, and November 30. PLEASE UPDATE NOW! • Submit final report February. (Same date as Hallmark Awards) 10. Receive recognition for your success in the Five Star Program!

  24. Five Star Chapter Development Program Recognition Your chapter will be recognized for whatever level they attain, regardless of the goal they set! LocalA letter will be mailed to your college president citing the significance of the chapter's level of achievement in the Five Star Chapter Development Program. RegionalYour Regional Coordinator or a Headquarters representative will present the Five Star Award certificate to your chapter during your region's annual awards presentation. InternationalNames of participating chapters and their levels of achievement will be featured in the Regions Directory on Phi Theta Kappa's website. Participating chapters will also be recognized at the International Convention.

  25. The Horizon Award • Recognizes new advisors who participate in regional and international programs, and • Recognizes more experienced advisors who have attained new levels of achievement in Phi Theta Kappa programs. • Presented on recommendation from the Regional Coordinator. • A certificate will be presented to the advisor at your regional awards presentation. • The names of award recipients will be posted in the Regions Directory on Phi Theta Kappa's website. The Executive Director's Achievement Award • Recognizes achievements of chapters that have been chartered for two years or less and have completed at least the first two levels in the Five Star Program. • A certificate will be presented during the region's awards presentation. • The names of chapters receiving this honor will be posted in the Regions Directory on Phi Theta Kappa's website.

  26. Remember… • Start NOW! It’s not too late! • The final reporting deadline is firm—final update is due no later than February. • Five Star runs on a calendar year, along with hallmarks. • The program is all online for your convenience. • Updates may be submitted by the advisor or the chapter president. • Double-dipping takes half the time! • Attaining Five Star status prepares you well for the Hallmark Awards competition. • Administrators love to brag about their Five Star chapters!
