  1. MME-562 Seminar: Issues in Mathematics: Using Advanced Educational Technology to support Data-Driven Decision Making.

  2. Happy Halloween

  3. Set-up • Open Turing’s Class • Open WIKI- • Go to PIMSE link • Go to your name at the bottom of the page. • Write about the routines you have developed this year with ASSISTment. Write as a way to share with others what you have found successful. Include changes you have made to trouble shoot problems.

  4. Agenda • Report on Successful Routines. • Level 2 Formative Assessment. The student’s roll in the Formative Assessment cycle • Parent Notification • Studies we are running IQP Presentations • Looking at Open Response on ASSISTment • Beta Essay Grading

  5. Popham’s FAC Definition Formative assessment is a planned process in which assessment-elicited evidence of students’ status is used by teachers to adjust their ongoing instructional procedures or by students to adjust their current learning tactics. Pg 6 Level 1 Level 2

  6. Your students? Think Pair Share • You have a learning objective. A lesson is carried out. You provide an assessment (you could even provide an assessment during the lesson). • Brainstorm two lists. • How do you include your students in monitoring if they have reached the learning objective. • How could you include your students in monitoring if they have reached the learning objective. • Pair up and expand the list. Take note of those that use ASSISTment. • Share the list with the group.

  7. Student inclusion ideas? • Have the students look at their item report while you are all looking at the class item report • In Donna Lee Tignor she had the student write responses for the problems they got wrong. So they did look at the results. • DL listed the results in a folder so the students would see their own progress each week. • My Yoga teacher asked us to take note of how far we could stretch before and after class. • If you give an open response question on ASSISTment. Pick 4 particular ones to go over and then have your students go back to their item report and grade their own or grade theirs and their partners. Then give them a second chance.

  8. They know the results. Then What? • Popham talks a lot about students changing their learning tactics. • This is a BIG topic. Over the next three weeks ask yourself: • Do I make the learning objectives clear to my students? • Do they know if they have or have not attained the learning objective? • Do they know what they can do to remedy any deficiencies. Do you know what they try to do? Ask them.

  9. Parent Notification • Zach Brodrick and Parent Notification!

  10. IQP-New content Opportunity • Tutoring -v- Web Pages, Steve, Dan, Paul, Matt • Tutoring -v- Just correct feedback with answer, Peter, Dan, Christopher • Replication of Rittle-Johnson Study Matt, Sam, Ethan • Tutoring -v- Complete Explanation Ruowang, Beth, Steve • Mean Median Mode Range Mixed Review or Not, Manasi • Order Matters? Our own Matt and Zach P.

  11. Sorting through Student Work • Do the Math Problem Set 10 • “MSA - Exit Card - Linear or Not!” • Sort the responses into 3 piles for scores of 0, 1 or 2. If you were going to pick 3 responses to share with the class which ones would you share and why?

  12. ASSISTment Issues • Grading Essays • Anything else?

  13. November Comments • Last meeting we ran out of time for this activity. I want to try again. I value your input: • that worked • you would change • you learned about on November 14 and are excited to implement. • and or just ask a question. Go to Turing’s Class and do Problem Set #11
