  2. Introduction • Customer Requirements • Research • Benchmarking • Updates • Schedule • Conclusion University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  3. Customer Requirements • Competitive (fast enough to win!) • Durable • Smooth ride • Safe • Excellent brakes • Cost < $300 • Stable at speed • Excellent handling • Simple to drive • Easy to move uphill University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  4. Research • The race descends Mt. Taber located in Portland Oregon. University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  5. Research Course Distance – Elevation – Turn Radius Information For Mt. Taber Racing Course in Portland Oregon University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  6. Research Velocity Turbulence Velocity and Turbulence profiles were conducted in Fluent. These are preliminary models to learn the fundamentals of Fluent. Future 3D models will be analyzed and applied to the racer in order to optimize aerodynamics. University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  7. Benchmarking Body Positioning Head first Feet first Photos Courtesy of Portland Soapbox Derby Team Decided to race in the Feet First Position University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  8. Benchmarking • 20” BMX Wheel set Pre built BMX wheels offer a very strong, low friction foundation for a fast racer. Photo Courtesy of Portland Soapbox Derby • Three Wheel Design This Design lends itself to better aerodynamics because the rear wheel is within the faring. 9. Benchmarking • Ackerman Steering Ackerman Steering Geometry reduces wheel drag in the turns by giving an independent steering radius to each wheel. University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  10. Updates Modeling of design prototype is in preliminary phase. A full working model will be developed before construction ensues. Model designed in SolidWorks University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  11. Updates • Benchmarking and Brain Storming ideas have led us to a proposed design prototype with a triangular frame design with three wheels and Ackerman Steering. University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  12. Updates Metal 2” Square Tubing Axle Wood 2”x4” Base Initial Prototype Chassis Design Front Model designed in SolidWorks University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  13. Schedule Key goals for fall semester • 10/30/05 - Develop solid models of entire design • 10/30/05 - Choose and purchase materials • 11/15/05 - Optimize aerodynamics using Fluent • 11/30/05 - Build working prototype for testing • 11/30/05 - Analyze and troubleshoot prototype in order to optimize speed of racer. University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby

  14. Conclusion • Customer Requirements are met • Research on course was conducted • Benchmarking other designs • Team’s updates were given • Schedule was posted University of Utah - Dept of Mechanical Engeneering - Soapbox Derby
