  1. Interactive Notebooks …AKA “Smash Books” Enhancing student learning through interaction with social studies content

  2. Goal • My ultimate goal for our interactive notebooks is that the students will see them as valuable reference guides and tools they can use to be successful in sixth grade social studies.

  3. Purposes • Enables students to take ownership of their learning • Serves as an organizational tool for collecting information • Encourages creativity and active learning • Addresses multiple intelligences through non-linguistic representations • Students collect information needed for state standards. • Students extend concepts and make connections. • Naturally links reading, writing and content area strategies.

  4. Materials Needed Composition or spiral notebook Glue sticks (provided) Scissors (provided) Highlighters and pens Colored pencils

  5. What will our Smash Books look like?

  6. In other words… • LEFT side=Teacher side: notes from class, teacher-provided information, charts, maps, etc. • RIGHT side=Student side: practice; using the LEFT side to be creative and work with the information.

  7. How are our Smash Books set up? • The first page will be a title page that will look like this... Student Name Teacher Name Class Period Date beginning the book • Pages 2-5 are the Table of Contents (T.O.C.) • Students will keep track of the topics and page numbers

  8. How will I grade the Smash Books? • An assessment rubric is glued in the inside back cover of the interactive notebook… • Smash Books will be collected once per month for a grade (see syllabus for grading). • These checks will not be a surprise. There is no excuse for not being prepared to turn in your Smash Book on check day.
