Enhancing College Writing: Visual Tools and ESL Resources for Student Success

This resource outlines the challenges college writers face, especially ESL students, and presents a comprehensive strategy for improvement. Through interviews and feedback, we identify a need for intuitive, visual tools that simplify the writing process. Our approach includes creating pathfinders, visual tutorials, and engaging learning activities tailored to the unique needs of students. By utilizing multimedia resources and emphasizing kinesthetic learning, we aim to build confidence and competency in writing. Our toolkit includes links to blogs as valuable writing tools and educational resources.

  3. Conclusions from Interview • Many students are using Internet for first time • Few conceive of it as a research tool • Students lack experience and confidence in writing • Need tools that operate at the basic level • Need more visual tools • Need more ESL-specific tools

  4. Our Strategy • Don’t re-invent the wheel: we aren’t reading/curriculum experts • Create pathfinders to existing expertise • Create visual tutorials at the most basic level • Create something specific to our client’s needs at UTB (ESL resources, visual references)
