National Health Examination Survey: The Beginning • July 3, 1956 ---- National Health Survey Act authorizing a continuous survey to provide statistical data on the amount, distribution, and effects of illness and disability in the U.S. • Established a Health Interview Survey with periodic “special surveys” based on health examinations (the “Health Examination Survey”) • Also proposed health records survey

  4. National Health Examination Survey: From an Idea to a Reality • Planning during 1957 and 1958 • Decision to use mobile examination centers • Three pilots in 1958 and 1959 • Survey begins in October 1959 • NCHS formed in 1960
