  2. Education System and Literacy Rate Literacy rate for Japan is 99% More than 90% of students’ progress through the upper secondary level (High School). A little less than half of them attend a two-year junior college or four-year university.

  4. Major Holidays and Customs May 3 - Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpokinenbi) It commemorates the date upon which Japan's post-WWII constitution was put into effect. Around Mar 20 - Vernal (spring) Equinox (Shun bun no hi), Japanese frequently visit the graves of their ancestors on this day. Feb 11 - National Foundation Day, celebrates the establishment of Japan as a nation.
  5. Shopping Practices and Unique Foods Like in the U.S, Japan has shopping centers, food marts, and convenience stores. Japan has a $1.28 trillion retail business, including $23 billion in direct door to door sales. Commonly eaten foods in Japan include: Sushi Yakiniku Yakitori Eels Omosubi (rice ball)
  6. Social Life and Religion Studies by anthropologists suggest that the Japanese sense of self is more “relational” than individualistic. Shinto, meaning "the way of the gods", is Japan's indigenous religion and is practiced by about 51% of the population. Buddhism- is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as the Buddha.
  7. Business Practices Japanese work environment that is based on a lifetime-employment model used by large companies as well as a reputation of long work-hours and strong devotion to one's company. Mostly technological businesses, such as automotive, electronics, etc. Working time per day is 8.4 hours. They choose to embrace merit-based systems to compete in an increasingly global business environment.

History that influences current business activities The Japanese post-war economic miracle (the historical phenomenon of Japan's record period of economic growth following World War II) It spurred mainly by United States investment but partly by Japanese government economic interventionism. The distinguishing characteristics of the Japanese economy during the "economic miracle" years included: the cooperation of manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and banks.
