Made as early as the 1920’s to evaluate the toxicity of consumer products and their ingredients. • Researchers force-feed or force ventilate extremely high doses of consumer products on animals to test the consequences of single, short term exposure. Product Testing
Biomedical research • Behavioral research • Military, Space, and Agricultural research • Product Development and Drug Testing Research
Approximately 10 million animals are used for crude classroom dissection exercises • Millions of live mice, rabbits, rats, and turtles, are tormented and killed in university-level biology and psychology demonstrations Education and Training
75 of the 98 Nobel Prize awards have been solely for animal testing • It started with the ancient Greeks, Arabs, and Romans • Nowadays it’s mostly the U.S. that tested on animals because many other countries have strict laws banning it. • The experiments in the U.S. started in the early 1920’s and the same methods have continued today • The methods have not changed History
The Animal Welfare Act is the only in the US that is against animal testing • The USDA is in charge of enforcing the AWA • Under the AWA, research institutions are required to establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) “to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution’s animal care and use program.” The Laws Against It
