  3. Historical Background • He was born in the French village Brouge • He learned the ways of the sea from his Father • He entered the Military early in his life • There is little known about his family background

  4. Historical Background • His first trip lead to North America in March 15, 1603. As a member of a fur trading expedition • After return to France on September 20 he created a map of the St. Lawrence River

  5. Historical Background • After setting a settlement in Algonquins Quebec he helped erecting houses, sowed grain, and did all he could to develop the fur trade • At July 3, 1608 he landed at the point of Quebec which would become later Quebec City

  6. Historical Background • Champlain made alliance with the Huron and the Algonquins promising to help them in their war against the Iroquois.

  7. Culture • The People were divided into two groups the rich people which lived in big houses and the poor people which lived in small houses • Most of the villagers had roman catholic religion • They had a simple lifestyle

  8. Religious Practices • Samuel de Champlain had a Roman Catholic Religion • He died in December 25, 1635 in Quebec city, Canada • He was a French explorer, colonial pioneer and the First Governor of New France

  9. Clothing • The people at that time have worn relatively softly constructed linear fashions of the Late Gothic • Throughout this era the clothing gets both tighter and stiffer, while being more and more puffed out with padding and slashing

  10. Housing and Travel • In 1599 he sailed on a 2.5 year mission to Vera Cruz proceeded inlands to the city of Mexico and returned by way panama • In May 1, 1604 he arrived at Sable Island • Coasting along Nova Scotia they finally determined to form a settlement at St.Croix

  11. Housing and Travel • During 1604-1606 Champlain explored the coast as far as Cape Cod • In 1608 Champlain and Pontgrave continued to travel up the St. Lawrence river to a place called Algonquins Quebec

  12. Family Life • Little is known of Champlain's family background • though he wrote much, about his expeditions, little personal information of Champlain's life is known • it is speculated by some that his mother was a Huguenot

  13. Language • Champlain was a French explorer so he only spoke French

  14. Map of geographic area • In 1603 he sailed to France Francois Grave Du Pont's expedition • He explored 3 years long much of the coast of Nova Scotia • In 1604 he returned to Quebec on Pierre de Mont's expedition
