  1. Last Time • Matter- takes us space and has mass • Matter is made of atoms • Some matter is radioactive • Matter that is radioactive has what is called a half life

  2. Understanding chemistry can help us to solve (environmental) problems • Bioremediation • Oil spills • Heavy metal contamination • Other uses of chemistry in the environment • Mine detection • Renewable polymers • Tracking drug trade

  3. So to solve problems…. …You have to know some chemistry

  4. Remember the periodic table?

  5. The periodic table includes things we should all be familiar with • Oxygen • Carbon • Nitrogen • Hydrogen These are the main types of atoms that make up biotic things.

  6. The periodic table also contains atoms that are harmful to life • Arsenic • Lead • Selenium • Mercury • Zinc • Cadmium

  7. Read “Letting Plants do the Dirty Work” • Make a Bubble Map that describes what you learned about phytoremediation • Use a green colored pencil to outline the circle if the describing bubble is a benefit of phytoremediation • Use a red colored pencil to outline the circle if the describing bubble is a drawback of phytoremediation

  8. Watch “Troubled Waters” • Make a Sequencing Thinking Map of the steps the scientists used to develop a solution to their observed problem
