A Centralized Economy • Government takes control of economy • 5 Year Plan that set production quotas or targets • Plan called for the construction of massive industrial centers to build tractors tanks airplanes & ships • Stalin’s Plan to Industrialize • Stalin wants to catch up with Europe • Wants to transform the Soviet Union from an agricultural country to an industrial superpower • The Socialist Ideal • Soviet citizens worked for the overall good of the country… NOT for individual gain • Individuals sometimes died for the benefit of the Soviet Union • Agricultural Production • Needed to increase food production to feed people in industrial cities • Land taken from peasants • Land turned into collective or cooperative farms
