  6. Project Overview PURPOSE The purpose of this high level globally linked initiative bringing knowledge and resource into a collaborative approach for the common goals of reducing road related trauma and delivering positive road safety outcomes internationally. VISION “Share in the Responsibility of Delivering Road Safety within the Global Resource Industry and Communities impacted by the Industry”

  7. Project Overview • OBJECTIVES • Develop a Light Commercial Vehicle Safety Specification Standard for all Industry light commercial vehicles up to 4.5 tonne. (Medium and Long Term) • Develop a Light Commercial Vehicle – Rollover Safety Specification Standard. (Long Term) • Share in the responsibility for delivering road safety outcomes in communities. (Medium Long Term) • Develop a Resource Industry minimum standard for road user education, training and management. (Medium Term)

  8. Project Overview • Goals • Work with manufacturers of vehicles to adopt a Vehicle Safety Standard for light commercial vehicles including vehicle rollover protection. • Influence industry and vehicle manufacturing minimum basic safety standards, including: • Minimum 4+ Star NCAP Safety Rating with Vehicle Rollover Protection • 3 Point Seat Belts with Pre-tensioners for all occupants • Front dual airbags • Side curtain airbags with rollover activation • Electronic Stability Control • Universal Connection Point for Event Data Recorders (EDR)

  9. Project Overview • Goals • Identify and recommend solutions to industry barriers (systems and people) that are preventing road safety outcomes. • Be data driven and hold a unique, credible knowledge bank that has the power to influence manufacturers and communities. • Use the cross-industry collaborative effort required to achieve the above as a stepping stone towards improving road traffic safety in the resource sector and the communities impacted by it.

  10. Unique Characteristics • Project jointly designed - Public and Private • International Road Safety NGO’s and Multi National Resources Organisations • Non Country Centric – Locally Based Concerns International Solutions • Data Underpinned and Data Driving • Project Reach: (Safe Vehicles) est. 3 million light commercial vehicles, 1 million per year turnover

  11. Limitations • We understand that not every light commercial vehicle incident will be preventable but we will strive to achieve an international Zero Harm methodology for all employees, contracts and community. • We also understand that this strategy will not provide a holistic road safety treatment that will prevent all industry or community related road trauma involving light commercial vehicles. • This strategy should not be considered in complete isolation to the greater need of reducing road related trauma with the industry and community.

  12. Project Model

  13. Safe Vehicles: Staged Approach Timeline • Currently Availably Technology • 4(+) NCAP Crash Rating • 3point belts • Airbags • ESC • Data Point • DROP • Future Technology • Rollover Protection and Occupancy Protection

  14. Vehicle Safety -Staged Approach • Stage 1 – Development • Understanding the current Vehicle Safety Specifications / Benefits and Risk Reductions (Create Industry Awareness) • Stage 2 – Years 1-3 • Development of Business Case of Cost / Vehicle / Benefits of Vehicle Safety Standard (Create Industry Leverage & Change) • Support DROP Research (Knowledge Transfer into Industry) • Stage 3 – Years 3-5+ • Vehicle Rollover and Occupancy Protection Safety Understanding (DROP Research) • Industry Data Monitoring & Evaluation • Outcomes • Increased Light Commercial Vehicle Safety Specification and Occupancy Protection (Reduced Road Related Trauma)

  15. Expected Outcomes • Facilitate an industry change in vehicle specifications and safety standards over the next five years • coming together of some of the world’s biggest companies and road safety NGO’s as well as a significant percentage of the global light commercial fleet market • Global Industry Preferred Vehicle Safety Standard for all light commercial vehicles • Stage 1: Standard for all employees, contractors and sub contracts with full adoption and implementation over the next five years (2015) • Stage 2: Further enhance the Vehicle Safety Standard (Vehicle Rollover Protection and Occupancy Protection)
