  1. Utopia and Dystopia Project Daniel Paul Pd.6 4/11/13

  2. Alan Heuer (Utopia)

  3. Question 1: The work relates to the idea of an utopian existence because the art illustrates a perfect place that is peaceful and the artist Alan Heuer quotes “I love New York City.” Everything is going well and that’s the way people would like New York to be and they would like to vision it that way. • Question 2: The time period might of affected the utopian society portrayed because the painting looks like a painting of back in the day in the picture because I see an older type buggy. I’m thinking its showing how things used to be peaceful back then than now. Also I think its during the spring because the flowers have grown. • Question 3: The mood is happy because everything is going smooth in the picture and it uses colors that help illustrate the happy mood. • Question 4: I think the artist’s purpose was to show a peaceful place in his painting and trying to show that with the colors that he uses and he shows a place with a city like resemblance and mountains in the background. • Question 5: An artist might want to portray an idealized setting because they may want to express the kind of society they would like to live and illustrate what they think seems perfect to them and is an utopia to them through their paintings. An artist may want to portray a chaotic or grotesque setting based on what they think is an utopia for themselves and they may not have the same desire as others. Utopia Questions

  4. Dystopia

  5. Question 1: This work relates to a dystopia because it shows the destruction of a building that may be important. This illustrates a war like atmosphere because their are airplanes dropping off bombs and there are cars being bombed and people dying. • Question 2: This time period looks like it could be in the modern day because they are using aircrafts that our modern day army would use to battle. Also the time period might of affected the artist’s vision because the artist probably felt that the modern day society is living their lives through wars. • Question 3: The mood in the painting is probably bad mood because the of the war taking place and everything getting bombed and burned. • Question 4: From my perspective I think that the artist’s purpose for this painting was to demonstrate how war between countries and societies are tearing the world apart showing the bombings taking place. Also the artist could be illustrating the complete opposite and is in favor for war and thinks that going to war is a utopia for him/her but I would probably have to get to the bottom of it by questioning the author. • Question 5: I think that the artist would portray a chaotic and grotesque setting like that because they make think that is the only thing that would bring peace and believes that it’s the only way to settle things. Some people just have the mindset that everything can be dealt with through war. Dystopia questions
