  3. Objectives Students will be able to… • Describe the evolution of the Roman Republic. • Use new strategies to understand primary source readings.

  4. One Slide of Notes • According to the legend, Romulus was the first of 7 kings of Rome • The last three were Etruscans • The last one was Tarquin the Proud. He was a dic…tator • The Romans tossed him out and decided never to have another king. Instead, they made a republic

  5. Glossary • Republic– a form of government where people vote for representatives, who will make decisions for them • Patrician – upper class in Rome; the aristocrats • Plebeian – lower class of Rome; common farmers and workers (the majority)

  6. Glossary • Senate – elected body that made laws in Rome. Members chosen from the patrician class only • Consuls – Roman officials who led the army and government. Like kings with limited powers • (there were also plebeian assemblies as another part of the government)

  7. Glossary • Tribunes – representatives of the plebeians, added to Rome’s government to protect the poor • Veto – Latin for “I forbid”; a Roman consul or tribune could reject the other’s decisions • Twelve Tables – body of written and publicly displayed laws in Rome that protected all citizens

  8. Primary Sources! • Roman writers bragged about the balance in their government • It had features of Monarchy, Aristocracy, and Democracy • Read the document from Polybuis and complete the chart
