  1. Words of the Wiser Definition • A scene where the main character has a quiet and serious talk with a wiser character. • Be sure to read the advice carefully – the author includes it for a reason! • This advice is helpful for the moment but could also be helpful throughout life.

  2. Words of the Wiser Insights • Gives us insight into the conflict and possible resolution • Gives us a clue towards what the author wants the character to do – and thus, we can get some hints about the theme

  3. Question to Ask • What has the character learned and how will this advice affect the character in the future?

  4. Example • Where do we see Words of the Wiser in “A&P”? • What has Sammy learned and how will this advice affect Sammy in the future?

  5. Memory Moment Definition • A point in the text when the writer interrupts what’s happening in the story to show the us the main character as he/she remembers something important. • Clues: “I remembered,” “The memory came back to me,” “My dad liked to tell the story about…,” “This picture always reminded me of….”

  6. Memory Moments Insights • Give us insight into the character • Gives us insight into the conflicts that the character faces • Gives us insight into how the character might solve a conflict

  7. Question to Ask • Why might this memory be important? • What does this tell us about the way the main character might solve a problem? • What does it tell us about what the main character is feeling or thinking? • What does it tell us about what the main character values or finds important? • What does it tell us about what the main character wishes for? • What does it tell us about what the main character fears or worries about?
