IB Literature and Language

1. What I've learned IB Literature and Language • Creating a Blog about This Course • Your Task: Convey What You Have Learned Through Strandson the Blog ~ This will be a two-year project that will be a compilation of various assignments. • Each Strand will be graded as a summative assessment. Rubrics and further explanations can be found on Moodle.

2. Strand 1: Language and Power • Hitting the Bull's Eye: How Words Persuade through Rhetorical Devices • What You Need to Do: Task 1: audio or video file of a speech that meant something to you. Task 2: Written Reflection of why this speech is important to you. Written in first person, you need to make at least 3 links to speech. Minimum of 200 words, maximum of 300 words. Task 3: Ethos, Pathos and Logos: Define these terms and offer an example of this through a multimedia medium. (iMovie, audio file, video clip from movie) Explain your examples in a paragraph of around 150 words. Task 4: Choose 3 Rhetorical Devices from Thank You For Arguing and offer an entry that defines these terms, example of this in a speech, and your reflection on the sample and why you chose that particular term.

3. Strand 2: Legal Language • Task 1: Characteristics of Legal Language – Written document containing this list from class handout with your own examples of each from a document you find. • Task 2: Content: Locate and include 2 examples of a legal document. This can be a lease, disclaimer, example of written contract. • Task 3: Reflection (one written/one oral)about each document in which you identify at least 2 characteristics of legal language in the document. Included in each reflection is your personal opinion on the effectiveness of the document. • Task 4: Scholarly article on some sort of legal topic. You need to annotate this article, scan and upload. Then write a commentary about the article addressing the main point of the article, aspects of the use of legal language in the article and your interest in the topic.

4. Strand 3: Scientific Language • Task 1: Written document containing the characteristics of Scientific Language from class handout. You need to include examples from articles read in class or that you find on your own. • Task 2: Scholarly article on a scientific topic. You need to annotate this article, scan and upload. • Task 3: Then write a commentary about the article addressing the main point of the article, aspects of the use of scientific language in the article and your interest in the topic.

5. Strand 4: Sports Language • Task 1: Locate and include 2 examples of a sports reporting. • Task 2: Reflection (one written/one oral)about the examples of the communicating about sports. This could be an article from Sports Illustrated, or a video clip of an interview with an athlete, or it could be a clip of a commentator. Then you need to evaluate the example by identifying the type of language used. Its effectiveness and your interest in the topic.

6. Strand 5: Language and Identity ~The Culture of Me Task 1: Written task: A scene from a screenplay in which they are part of a language subset speaking in that dialect. * see class handout Task 2: Post a quote from someone reflecting an aspect of themselves and language. Task 3: Post a song that defines or reflects an aspect of themselves and language use. This written reflection about how they song helps define them Task 4: Produce an imovie about how the languages you use reflect different aspects of yourself. Task 5: Post at least 3 visuals [painting, photo, drawings] with explanation of why they included it on their blog post
