  1. Emergency Situations • In emergency situations it is very important not to panic but to act promptly. • Emergency situations are not only dangerous to the driver but to all roadway users in the area. • Emergencies may cause other drivers to honk impatiently but should not push the driver into rash actions. • Keeping your vehicle well maintained may prevent mechanical emergencies from occurring. • If an emergency should occur, know the correct action and reaction.

  2. Emergency Situations • Tire Failure • Tire Suddenly Looses Pressure • Accelerator Pedal Sticks • Headlight Failure • Vehicle Fire • Brake Failure • Engine Failure • Engine Flooding

  3. Emergency Situations • Engine Flooding • Engine Overheating • Power Steering Failure • Immersion • Windshield Wiper Failure • Emergency Swerve / Object in Roadway • Loss of Forward Vision • Stalled Vehicle on Rail Road Tracks

  5. Car On Fire

  6. Brake Failure

  7. Running Off The Pavement • Don’t try to swerve back onto the pavement because you may throw the car off balance. • Stay on the shoulder and ease up on the gas • After you have slowed turn gently back onto the pavement

  8. Minimizing Risk In Collisions • Force of Impact: • Speed of the vehicle • Weight of the vehicle • Impact distance • Reducing the force of impact: • Sand Canisters • Vehicle features (ex. air bags) • Head-on, worst type of collision • Side Impact, behind passenger compartment

  9. Avoiding A Collision • Accelerating – may be your only means of reducing risks • Steering – may be the quickest method, always have an escape route • Braking – you want to stop fast without making the wheels lock, or stop turning. An anti-lock brake system (ABS) eliminates the problem of locked brakes.
