  1. Chemigating with Confidence Class Exercise

  2. Guidelines • Work in teams • Use your notes • Calculate injection rate • Set injection pump

  3. Calibration – Seven Basic Steps Determine the: 1.Size of the treated area, in acres. 2. Pivot circumference, in feet. 3. Pivot travel speed, in feet per minute. 4. Product used and application rate. 5. Total amount of product required. 6. Injection rate in gallons per hour. 7. Injection pump setting.

  4. Chemigation Assumptions A grower will apply Vydate C-LV to a potato field for nematode suppression. Pivot to last tower is 1,275 feet. Wetted radius is 1,300 feet. No swing arm & endgun will be disabled. Target irrigation depth is 0.33-inch water. Application rate is 40 ounces per acre. 250-gallon tank will be used. Diaphragm pump output is 22 gallons/hour. DUlq is 79 percent.

  5. Chemigation Calibration • Determine size of treatment area.

  6. Chemigation Calibration 1,275 feet 1,300 feet Area = r2 Field Size = 3.1416 x 1,300 feet x 1,300 feet Field Size = 5,309,304 feet2 or 122 acres

  7. Chemigation Calibration • Calculate center pivot circumference.

  8. Chemigation Calibration 1,275 feet 1,300 feet C = 2r Circumference = 2 x 1,275 feet x 3.1416 Circumference = 8,011 feet

  9. Chemigation Calibration • Determine product application rate • Vydate C-LV • 40 fluid ounces • Total quantity of Vydate C-LV required • 40 fluid ounces/acre x 122 acres = 4,880 ounces or 38.1 gallons

  10. Chemigation Calibration • Determine Vydate C-LV application rate • Vydate C-LV • 40 fluid ounces • Total quantity of Vydate C-LV required • 4,880 ounces or 38.1 gallons 250-Gallon Batch 211.99 250.00

  11. Chemigation Calibration • Determine Vydate C-LV application rate • 40 fluid ounces • Total quantity of Vydate C-LV required • 4,880 ounces or 38.1 gallons • 250 gallon batch • Set center pivot speed • Adjust irrigation depth for DUlq = 79% • 0.33-inch / .79 = 0.42-inch

  12. Chemigation Calibration • Determine Vydate C-LV application rate • 40 fluid ounces • Total quantity of Vydate C-LV required • 4,880 ounces or 38.1 gallons • 250 gallon batch • Set center pivot speed • Adjust irrigation depth for DUlq = 79% • 0.33-inch / .79 = 0.42-inch • 30 percent • 28 hours

  13. Chemigation Calibration • Determine Vydate C-LV application rate • 40 fluid ounces • Total quantity of Vydate C-LV required • 4,880 ounces or 38.1 gallons • Set center pivot speed • 30 percent (0.42-inch) or 28 hours • Injection rate (250-gallon batch) 8.93 Gallons per Hour

  14. Chemigation Calibration • Injection rate • 8.93 gallons per hour • Pump setting • Rated at 25 gph • Actual is 22 gph 40.6%

  15. 1.0515 Chemigation Calibration • Pump setting • 41% • “Tweaking” the setting • Calculated setting is usually lower than actual. • Conversion: gallons/hour to milliliters/second 9.39 Milliliters/Second

  16. 0.03556 Chemigation Calibration • Pump setting • 41% • “Tweaking” the setting • Calculated setting is usually lower than actual • Conversion: gallons/hour to ounces/second 0.318 Ounces/Second

  17. Verifying Pump Setting • 30 second checks until close to setting. • Verify with a 5 minute check.

  18. Site Tube Method • Determine tube diameter. • Use ½-inch • Calculate volume/inch. • Cylinder volume = 3.1416 x r2 x height 3.1416 x .252 x 1 inch 0.19635 inch3 • 0.554112 ounce/inch3 • 9.191 ounces/inch • Convert gallons/hour to ounces/second. • Factor: 0.03556 • Convert volume to inches. • Use 10 second collection. • Ounces collected x 9.2

  19. 3 lbs. nitrogen / acre desired. Product contains 2.76 lbs. nitrogen / gallon. 120-acre pivot. 24-hour set. 0.25-inch site tube. 10-second collection is used.

  20. Site Tube Calibration 5.435 gallons /hour 0.1933 ounces /second 9.19118 ounces/inch ≈ 17.75 inches
