  2. Childhood • Dad owned a grocery store & wanted Monet to work in it • Lived by the sea and met many interesting people who came in on shipping boats • Lived with his aunt, a painter, when his mother died • Loved art & wanted to paint what he saw

  3. Monet not a good student • Good sense of humor • Did not listen in school • Made funny caricatures that friends paid $$ for • “Caricature of a Man with a Large Nose” at the Art Institute of Chicago

  4. Impressionism • Small, thin strokes • Importance of light and ordinary objects • Lots of movement in paintings • Monet loved the outdoors & water • “Impression, Sunrise” painting developed term

  5. Monet’s Favorite Subjects • Boats • Oceans • Ponds • Lakes • Outdoor scenes • Monet thought painting inside was stuffy

  6. Studied art in Paris • Monet met other artists like Renoir and they shared his love for painting outdoors • Impressionist painters had no money, just painted all day long • So poor, they ate beans for 2 months straight

  7. Floating studio • Edoard Manet painted Monet painting in his boat • Monet fixed a boat, kept his supplies in it and floated down the river • Painted what he saw as he traveled

  8. Monet wanted paintings to be well known • Tried to get his paintings to show at the Salon in Paris • Many were not picked • Painted “Women in the Garden” which is same woman in 4 different poses • Camille was his favorite model • Monet and Camille fell in love and married

  9. Reflection & light • Monet wanted to paint scenes of everyday life, but not many people liked the art • Kept on painting anyway and showed colors, shadows and light as real as possible • Loved the way color reflect in light

  15. Project • Get a small square of a Monet • You get to be Monet and finish the drawing • Bright, soft colors and blending with water colors • Think of movement and shadows when painting
