  1. Lesson One Date:January 14th, 2019 Learning Targets: • I can assess the credibility and accuracy of online sources. • I can trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

  2. Real or Fake? Finding Credible Sources • Currency: When was this source published? Was it published more than three years ago? • Relevant: Is the information related to your topic? Does it answer your research questions? Is the source biased (sharing only one side of a story/promoting a belief or opinion)? • Authority: Who is the author (a single person, a corporation)? Are references, sources, or credentials provided? Can I confirm this information by checking it against other sources? • Purpose: Was this written to inform, sell, persuade, or entertain? Is the site full or clickbait or pop up ads?

  5. Lesson Two Date: Learning Targets: • I can assess the credibility and accuracy of online sources. • I can trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

  6. Real or fake: Evaluating Sources Game Your Task: Keep it or toss it into the fake news garbage? The Game: • Source stations: There are stations set up all around the classroom with sources of information. As a group, you will visit each station and use the C.R.A.P. checklist to determine if the source is REAL or FAKE. If the source is real, leave it and move on. If the source is fake, write the title of the source on a THIS SOURCE IS FAKE NEWS slip and hold on to it until the end of our game. • Throw it out: After we have visited all of the stations, I will reveal which sources are real and which are fake. Crumple up each item of fake news that you identified correctly. Each team will have the chance to shoot the crumpled fake news into our fake news garbage! The group with the most points will win Fake News Detective badges.
