  2. Who are they? • Part-time community college employees housed in local high schools • Career Coaches work with high school students to help determine career goals and create a plan to reach those goals • Career Coaches are the career pathways specialists in the high school

  3. History of Career Coaches… 2009 Career Coach Academy in Charlottesville, VA

  4. History of Career Coaches… • Began in January of 2005 with 11 coaches located in 11 high schools • Fall 2009 there are over 120 career coaches serving 175 high schools • All 23 community colleges in the VCCS currently have career coaches • DCC currently has 4 career coaches serving 6 high schools. Every high school in the DCC service region currently has a Career Coach.

  5. Program Structure Career Coaches have defined goals andoutcomes supplied by the VCCS and DCC in order to measure program success. These outcomes include targets for the following: • Student Contacts • Individual /Group Coaching sessions • Career Assessments/Career Plans • Dual Enrollment/Tech Prep referrals • College Placement services

  6. Program Structure Data on Career Coach program is collected by the VCCS in several methods including: • Bi-annual Career Coach Reports • Student Surveys • Pre and Post Graduation Surveys • PeopleSoft Reports • High School Administrators Surveys

  7. Survey results (statewide) • Over 95% of all students reported that the services provided by a career coach were either satisfactory or excellent • Over 95% of all high school administrators responded that their career coach was either satisfactory or excellent

How the Career Coach program impacts Community Colleges… • Career coaches help to strengthen the relationship between high schools and community colleges • Career Coaches in Gear-Up (a SCHEV managed program) identified schools work directly with LI/FG student populations to encourage college attendance • Career Coaches are a community college advocate located in the high school

Data Results (statewide) • Career Coaches contacted 82,750 students • 57,575 received one-on-one or small group coaching services • 30,320 career assessments were given by career coaches in Virginia • 30,540 students were referred to dual enrollment/tech prep programs • 17,875 students were assisted with college admission services

Statewide Results • 7% increase in statewide community college enrollments from high schools with a career coach when compared to high schools without a coach • 5% increase in statewide dual-enrollments in high schools with a career coach when compared to high schools without a coach • 4% increase in statewide community college enrollments in career and technical education programs from high schools with a career coach when compared to high schools without a coach

  11. DCC Career Coach academic year 07/08 program results • 2984 students received one-on-one or small group coaching • 853 career plans were developed • 100% of all high school administrators surveyed reported that career coaches were either satisfactory or excellent

  12. DCC Career Coach academic year 08/09 program results • 3429 students received one-on-one or small group coaching • 781 career plans were developed • 100% of all high school administrators surveyed reported that career coaches were either satisfactory or excellent

  13. Direct Impact on DCC… • In academic year 07/08 DCC benefited from career coaches by experiencing…. • 8% increase in dual enrollment • 18% increase in enrollment from high schools in the service region when compared to enrollment in the previous academic year • At this time 08/09 enrollment figures that relate to the Career Coaching program have not been released.

  14. VCCS recognition of DCC Career Coaching excellence This year DCC was awarded two $15,000 grants from the VCCS for a total of $30,000 in recognition for outstanding results in the career coaching program. This award was the second highest grant award given by the VCCS.

  15. New grant award for MET Coaches The VCCS granted DCC $50,000 to hire a Career Coach that focuses primarily on Manufacturing, Engineering, & Technology program areas. Michael Easley(Halifax, Gretna, Dan River & PCTC) Tameka Womack-Spencer - VCCS Regional Coach (G. W., Chatham & Tunstall)
