  3. What is flow? That state of mind when you are so immersed in what you are doing that you lose track of time.

  4. Inquiry… …you wonder about something and you want to know it—in fact you’re driven to know it because it’s intriguing, puzzling, fascinating, and/or personally meaningful to you. Diane Parker, 2007

  5. Conditions of Flow Losing track of time...

  6. 1) A clear purpose, goals and immediate feedback. • Essential Questions should guide work every day. • Students always know where they are heading and how they are doing in the journey.

  7. 2) A challenge that requires an appropriate level of skill and assistance in order to be successful – Zone of Proximal Development • Front load • Clear sequence • Differentiation and layering

  8. 3) A sense of control and developing competence – students have a voice, an opinion, some choice and can name their growing competence. • Think alouds • Drama/ Action strategies • Questioning and discussion • Track success

  9. 4) A Focus on the immediate experience – Current relevance, making or doing, immediate function, fun, humour, edginess, debatable, exportability. • Fun choices • Student-chosen critical inquiries • Enduring understandings and essential questions

  10. 5) Importance of the Social: Collaborative group work, peer assistance and teaching, social purpose. • Engage in a contract to care • Move into the community • Talk about critical social issues
