  1. Desktop Publishing Unit 7

  2. Unit Layout • Five Assessment Objectives • Unit Completion end of January • Allowing 2-3 Months contingency work.

  3. Scenario • You are going to be working on behalf of Internet start up company specialising in Extreme Sports. • They require documentation to use with customers and suppliers that are relevant to the company they are, yet still show their unique identity.

  4. This Unit.... • By completing this unit candidates will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of planning, drafting, developing and creating a technically complex DTP publication to meet a given design brief and the different needs of a target audience. • Candidates will produce evidence to meet the unit assessment objectives in order to show that they understand how to: • research and plan a publication to match a design brief and target audience • create and apply a template and style sheet to a publication • research and source text and images to use in the final documents • select and use advanced tools in desktop publishing software to create a set of documents • prepare documents for distribution and save in suitable file formats • produce an evaluation report and document describing the remaining stages of producing multiple copies of the publication using commercial printing processes.

  5. This Unit.... • For this unit candidates are being assessed on their DTP skills and are required to use DTP software. It is not acceptable to use Word Processing software. • Candidates will be expected to plan, draft, develop and then produce a range of documents eg newsletter, flyer, brochure, for a given scenario. The candidates should be provided with a scenario and a design brief from a client which covers one organisation so that corporate image and consistent house style can be considered by the candidate. The candidate must use the results of their review to plan their publication.

  6. This Unit.... For Assessment Objective 1, candidates need to make clear the purpose of each of their documents and the intended target audience. Candidates must produce design sketch plans, for each document, which includes evidence that the candidate has researched and evaluated different elements from a range of professionally produced publications from a range of different organisations. The design sketches can be hand-drawn or created on a computer but must be detailed enough to match the final publication. The design sketches must also consider house style, layout, corporate image and the content of the pages. The publications should include a variety of graphics some of which the candidate will need to create themselves. Candidates must evidence their research by stating their sources in a bibliography of their report in Assessment Objective 6.

  7. Today... Candidates must produce design sketch plans, for each document, which includes evidence that the candidate has researched and evaluated different elements from a range of professionally produced publications from a range of different organisations.

  8. Assessment Objective One • Research and plan a set of documents to meet a given client brief

  9. Pass • Candidates carry out limited research on only one organisation to collate different publications. • Candidates provide limited evidence linking their research to the design sketches. • They produce a basic plan which includes: a statement of purpose for the documents, a description of the target audience, sketches which indicate where text and images will be placed and identification of software to be used.

  10. Merit • Candidates carry out independent research from a range of sources, which they identify, to collate different publications. • Candidates provide evidence linking their research to the design sketches. • They produce a plan which includes: details of the purpose of the documents, a description of the target audience, detailed sketches which indicate where text and images will be placed and identification of software to be used. • The sketch plans meet the requirements of the client brief.

  11. Distinction • Candidates carry out independent research from a wide range of sources which they identify and includes three different organisations to collate different publications. • Candidates provide clear evidence linking their research to the designs. • They produce a comprehensive plan to meet fully the requirements of the brief which includes: details of the purpose of the documents, a description of the target audience and detailed sketches. • The sketches indicate where text, images and visual signposts will be placed. • They identify the software to be used.

  12. Today • Research • a range of professionally produced publications from different organisations with different end users • materials (text/graphics) to be included in the publication to match the given design brief from the client

  13. WILF • A dossier of many different companies, many different publications. • Consider • purpose of documents • target audience • elements required in the documents e.g. logos, colour scheme, specific fonts • sketches of layouts for each document • visual signposts e.g. artwork, titles, frames, boxes, borders • selection of the most appropriate software
