Read & Discuss Chapter 7: Lesson 1 Quilt Presentations Verbal-visual Vocabulary Square Each student will be assigned a specific term and create a verbal-visual vocabulary square to present. The students will create a class definition quilt for the Underground Railroad by connecting their squares. Back to TimeLine

  4. Assign & Research Underground Railroad Person Book Selection Students will choose an individual to read about and present their person through a wax museum concluding the unit. Students will create a book report about their individual explaining who they chose, that individual’s role and their personal thoughts. Back to TimeLine

  5. Investigation of Song “The Drinking Gourd” History of “the Drinking Gourd” Follow the drinking gourd! Follow the drinking gourd. For the old man is awaiting for to carry you to freedom If you follow the drinking gourd. The students will investigate and translate the words of this famous song into meaningful directions in which the slaves used to reach their freedom in the north. Back to TimeLine

U.S. Citizen Viewpoint Simulation Fugitive Slave Law the U.S. Government passed a law stating that all runaway slaves must be returned to their owners or face the penalty of a fine or imprisonment. The students will debate the Fugitive Slave Law and be able to explain how this law impacted the slaves. Back to TimeLine

  7. Wax Museum Finale Students will present their important person of the Underground Railroad to the class in the form of a wax person. The students will have 2-3 minutes to present themselves in a clear and organized manner. Back to TimeLine

  8. Field Trip to Detroit Historical Museum “Road to Freedom” Exhibit Students will take part in an interactive skit depicting the people and slaves involved in the Underground Railroad. Resources
