  2. Index • Guest-workers from Italy • Guest-workers from Poland • Living situation • Teenage Immigrants with a criminal background • Asylum seekers

  3. Guest- workers from Italy • first guest-workers came from Italy (Dec 1955). Reason: • Lack of employees because of the military service law. • Italian people were jobless. • A law let employees come to German companies. • After the work effort they should leave Germany. • Italians brought their families to Germany. • 4 million Italians have come to Germany.

  4. Life of an Italian Immigrant • His family was broken. • His brother went back to Italy. • His children had problems at school. • He was 22 years when he came to Germany. • Germans offended him. • He had to care for his family because he was one of the oldest children.

  5. Living Situation of guest workers Flats • Guest workers lived in small and unpleasant flats. • Had to share it with other workers: Up to six people shared one flat. • Had only the things they really needed to live there, like a bed and the kitchen equipment.

  6. Social and financial situation • They received less payment than the Germans: Didn't “deserve“ the same. • The rent was deducted from the payment. • Were often “bad mouthed“ Like: “Itaker“ (wop), “Polake“ and “frog-eater“. • Rumours were spread Like they are womanizers. • Lived separated from the Germans.

  7. Teenage immigrants with a criminal Background • Violence starts at ages 14-17 (when jobs actually don’t play a role). • When they grow up in an area where there are a lot of criminal gangs, it is easy to get on the wrong track. • Germany and Britain are not sharing the best-practise strategies when it comes to tackling the problem. • Most crimes are committed by young Muslims. • Germany has decided to give them consistent advice.

  8. Asylum seekers in Germany

  9. Basic information • 2013: 130.000 asylum seekers in Germany. • In 2013 there are more asylum seekers than in 2006 to 2009 together. • Most of the asylum seekers come from Russia, Serbia and Syria.

  10. Problems of asylum seekers • Bad living situation • Small rooms • Too many people for the small rooms • Not enough equipment (kitchen, bathroom, washing machine etc.) • Old and dirty flats • Integration • Not everyone gets the change to learn German in a German course. • The asylum seekers are separated from the Germans.
