  1. SWAMPSCOTT HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION IMr. Bush, Mrs. Lavender Quote: Physical Education is a subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life.

  2. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Physical Education: Part 1 • Graduation requirement, usually taken the first semester of Freshman Year. • Throughout the semester, students will be taught skills in a variety of activities classified as lifetime fitness activities, team sports, net games, personal safety, dance, and Project Adventure. • This course is designed to promote physical, social, and emotional development of ALL students, regardless of their athletic abilities.

  3. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to participate in health-enhancing physical activity throughout their lives

  4. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Increase blood flow through movement to help • stimulate brain function, to aid in academic success • release endorphins, which help alleviate the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression • improve student fitness levels

  5. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Understand the importance of being physical fit in relation their physical, emotional, and mental well-being

  6. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Assess personal fitness levels, and recognize the health consequences associated with low scores in each area evaluated, as well as how to improve them

  7. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Provide students and parents with a printout of the fitness results so that they may track their progress or over an extended period of time

  8. COURSE OBJECTIVES • CHARACTER: Help students recognize the importance of such social values as respect, effort, honesty, and safety, not only in a classroom setting, but also in all avenues of life

  9. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Provide students with an opportunity to practice those values within structured activities.

  10. GRADING: How to keep your “A” • 60%= Code of Conduct: Effort / Participation, Honesty/ Fair Play, Respect, Safety, Fun • 35% = Being prepared for class • 5%= Bonus for standout in Code, ex. effort, helping others, etc. • *In general, students who receive A+ are students who not only do everything asked with a great attitude and effort, but also go out of their way to include all students.

  11. PE 1 Procedure • 10 minutes from the bell to enter locker room, change and be on the benches ready for class. • Travel together to Gymnasium • Immediately get into squad lines • Attendance is taken • Warm-ups • Class Activity • Debrief and travel to locker rooms

  12. CODE OF CONDUCT The Code of Conduct is a direct reflection on your character. No one, including you, will remember how many P.E. games you won, but everyone will remember the character you exhibited in the process! **The social skills taught through our code are key components for being not only being successful in our class, but also in life!

  13. CODE OF CONDUCT • Safety: Physical and Emotional Safety of all Students (You are responsible for yourself and your classmates)

  15. CODE OF CONDUCT • Effort & Participation **So important in meeting our course objectives **Crucial especially when you are part of a group or team **Recognize the efforts of your classmates, include everyone

  16. CODE OF CONDUCT • 4. HONESTY / FAIR PLAY: • No one likes to play with those who cheat • It is ok to be competitive, but never at the expense of your character

  17. CODE OF CONDUCT • Positive Attitude: -Keep an open mind, don’t be afraid to try new things. -HAVE FUN!!

Proper Attire for Physical Activity • Sneakers, designed for physical activity, and socks • Change of clothes appropriate for exercise that also follow our school dress code: (t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, nylon pants, shorts, etc.) **No spaghetti strap tanks, or pants/shorts below waist ***We will be outdoors most days the next few months. Dress in layers!

  19. Medical Excuses • All medical excuses must come from a doctor or school nurse. • Alternative assignments assigned

  20. Absence From Class • It is your responsibility to speak with the teacher to find out what you missed. Arrangements will then be made for make-up. • Over 3 “office” excused absences: make-up work assigned • Unexcused absence =NO CREDIT! Must make arrangements with teacher for make-up

  21. Class Tardies • First unexcused tardy: verbal warning • Second unexcused tardy: meet afterschool with teachers • Third unexcused tardy: call home • Fourth unexcused tardy: Meeting with administration

  22. NO EXCUSES!!!!!!! • The opportunity to exercise and move during the school day is a privilege! • We have heard every excuse, if you are here in school, you can move! The benefits to you will be endless!!! • Excuses are the nails used to build a house of failure.  ~Don Wilder and Bill Rechin

  23. Summary: • How much you all enjoy this class is dependent on how well you and your classmates follow the Code of Conduct. • The best class experiences have had no connection to the physical abilities of our group, but rather the respect exhibited among classmates.
