  1. Welcome to Back to School Night!

  3. Our Class Schedule School Hours: 8:50-3:40 8:50-9:10Planners & Announcements 9:10-11:10 Balanced Literacy 11:10-12:30 Math 12:35-12:55 Recess 12:55-1:25 Lunch 1:25-1:55 Writer’s Workshop 1:55-2:40 Encore 2:40-3:10 Intervention/Enrichment 3:10-3:40 Science/Social Studies

  4. Resource Schedule Six day rotating schedule: Day 1: Technology Day 2: Guidance Day 3: Music Day 4: Library (return library books Day 5: PE (tennis shoes) Day 6: Art *Encore will rotate on half days between PPS and PES. This Friday PPS will NOT have Encore.

  5. Super Organized Binder • Students should bring S.O.S. binders to and from school each day. • All homework should be written in the agenda/planner • Please use the zipper pouch for any money or notes to me. Please make sure all money is bagged and labeled! • Student name, amount, and purpose! • Students are responsible for checking binders and taking care of the contents inside. • Please remind students to empty binders throughout the week.

  6. Balanced Literacy • Integrate reading, writing, and word study. • 20-30 min. Whole group mini-lesson and three 30 min. small group instructiongroups • Students will rotate through various literacy activities (Daily 5): read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, work on writing • During small group instruction we will focus on word study, fluency, and comprehension! **Comprehension strategy pack and foldable is a great resource to use throughout the year!

  7. Word Study • Word Journeys • Differentiated- Students are working on skills that they need • Weekly Activities: word sorts, chunk-chunk-blend, word building, word hunts, rhyming • There will be no homework or spelling tests to study for as word study is not simply memorizing a word list. Rather, it is recognizing patterns and sounds and applying them to other words

Math • Mini Lesson followed by two math rotations • Paper practice, games, computer, teacher • IXL, XTRA Math, other games matching our skill • Heavy use of manipulatives • Moving students through the concrete, representational, and abstract stages of learning • Math HW will occasionally be sent home solely so you can have extra practice if needed

  9. PowerSchool Assessments and Analytics • New for second graders • Math testing completed using this online program • We will scaffold students towards independence with this throughout the year! • What does this look like?

  11. Science and Social Studies We will be focusing on only one of these units at a time. First quarter we will be learning about: • Science: Investigations, Habitats • S.S: Civics, Maps & Globes, Citizenship *Students will be assessed by in class activities/projects/tests. *Study guides will be sent home for some units.

  12. Homework • Family Fun Homework choice boards! -Feedback appreciated! • Read at least 15/20 minutes each night • Math worksheet (optional, will be on the keep at home side) • Review science/social studies study guide (when sent home)

  15. Celebrations • Thank you to those who have signed up for our mini celebrations! You have been given a celebration sign up calendar! I will also be sure to remind you as the date approaches in our newsletters! • Per the student handbook, students are not allowed to bring in edible birthday treats for birthdays. You may, however, eat lunch with your child (12:55-1:25) • I would love to buy your child ice cream at the cafeteria for their birthday! Please let me know if you would prefer I not do this for your childand I will come up with an alternative • Per the student handbook, Birthday party invitations are not allowed to be passed out at schoolper school policy. Refer to the PTO directory or our classroom directory for invites to be sent out.

Field Trips • VA Living Museum • October 23rd • Permission slip coming soon! • Jamestown • May Information will be sent home. *chaperones welcome *no siblings *meet us there *Can now pay for field trips online! Miscellaneous • Lunch Money • Track your child’s account and make payments by registering at www.myschoolbucks.net • If you would only like your child to get breakfast or a snack at school on certain days, you may send in a note to put a block on the account • Bi-Weekly Newsletters • Monthly Scholastic Book Orders • Acceptable Use Policy • If you checked no to the school website, I cannot use your child’s picture in my newsletters or any other correspondence or activities as they may be posted online. If you notice your child is covered or blocked out, that is why. If you would like to switch your stance on this let me know and I can send home another form!
